Dordt Softball Opens Season Friday

GAMETIME… Dordt College is playing in a quickly put together “softball festival” hosted by Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  The Defenders will play five games on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2.  Dordt is scheduled to face York (Nebraska) at 10:00 Friday morning and Concordia (Nebraska) at noon.  The Defenders conclude Friday by facing the host, Oklahoma Baptist at 4:00.  The Defenders will then play a pair of teams from Kansas, Bethany and Bethel at 10:00 and noon on Saturday.

SCOUTING REPORT… York is 1-3 this season with four games played against Langston (Oklahoma).  The Panthers have been outscored 32-13 and have a team batting average of .217 while teams are batting .381 against York pitching.  Britney Curry has a team high five hits with a run batted in and a .357 batting average.  Corrine Pearl is batting .308 for the season with four runs batted in with a homerun, a double and four hits.  Tiffany Cole is 1-1 on the mound with a 3.94 earned run average.

Concordia is playing in its season opener after going 20-19 last season with a 13-8 conference record.  The Bulldogs return Molly Madsen with a team high .365 batting average with 38 hits and five doubles and 18 runs batted in.  Shelby Morose batted .273 last season with 15 runs batted in and five doubles.  The top returning pitcher is Amanda Beeson with a 6-11 record and a 2.80 earned run average in 112 innings of work.  Teams batted .271 against her last season.

Oklahoma Baptist is 7-0 this season and has outscored teams 63-17.  OBU has shut out three teams and has had one team play within one run of them, a 7-6 decision with Central Baptist (Arkansas).  Noelle Mcdowell leads the team with a .615 batting average and six runs scored with eight hits.  Kenna Self has 14 hits and is batting .519 with eight runs batted in.  Hannah Morris tops the team with 10 runs batted in and two homeruns.  OBU is batting .365 as a team and has ten homeruns.  Mcdowell and Chianelle Flores are both 3-0 with Flores allowing just five hits over 12 innings with no earned runs.  Mcdowell has a 3.50 earned run average in 20 innings pitched and has struck out 25 batters.

Bethany is 1-3 this season with a 5-1 win over Oklahoma City to its credit.  They’ve faced Northwestern (Iowa) this season and lost a 2-1 decision on February 16.  The Swedes have been outscored 23-11 and are batting .184 while allowing teams to hit for a .349 average against them.  Brittany Lewis and Emily Causey each have four this and Lewis has two runs batted in.  Jennifer Garcia is 0-2 this season on the hill with a 2.10 earned run average in 10 innings pitched.

Bethel is playing in its season opener and were 6-32 in 2012 with a 2-16 conference record.  Kylee Gragg is back after batting .338 last season with Sarah Cunningham batting .297.  Gragg had ten stolen bases and five triples.  Mary Sheridan had a team high 27 runs batted in last season with four homeruns.  Rachel Unruh is back after posting a 5-18 pitching record and she had a 5.67 earned run average.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is playing in its season opener after posting a 20-24 overall mark in 2012 and a 10-10 GPAC record.  The Defenders were outscored 201-140 last year and had a team batting average of .247.  The top returning hitter for Dordt is Ashton Beaird with a .339 batting average and a team high seven homeruns and 25 runs batted in last season.  Sidney Larsen pitched 117 innings last season and had a 9-11 record to go with a 3.35 earned run average.  She also struck out 50 batters while issuing 27 walks.

THE SERIES… Dordt has played each of the teams they are scheduled to face this weekend previously.  The Defenders lost their only meeting with Bethel and stand 1-4 against Bethany,  Dordt has faced Oklahoma Baptist five times and and OBU has won all of those games.  Dordt is 4-2 against York and has played conference rival Concordia 38 times and is 14-24 against the Bulldogs.

NEXT UP… York is scheduled to face Concordia (NE) on March 5.

Oklahoma Baptist has home games scheduled with Lubbock Christian on March 7 and 8.

Bethany is scheduled to face Baker on March 5.

Bethel is playing in a classic hosted by McPherson on Friday, March 8.

Dordt will play in Tucson, Arizona, March 11.
