March 1, 2013

Dordt Lacrosse in Minnesota Saturday
The Dordt College lacrosse team will travel to Faribult, MN to take on the Carleton Knights on Saturday at the Shattuck dome at St. Mary’s High School.

Game time is set for 4:30pm.

Last Time Out:
This will be Dordt College’s third game of the season after losing its season opener to Nebraska 8-4. The Cornhuskers jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage after one quarter. Dordt turned things around the second quarter but was unable to make up the difference on offense. Mark Opp had one goal and three assists. Drew Johnson and Nate Weigel each had one goal. Keeper Jordan Yntema made 20 saves.

The second game of the doubleheader pitted Dordt College against the Kansas-State Wildcats. The Sowers used great time of possession and jumped all over the Wildcats early, leading 6-2 at half. Kansas State rallied a comeback with the use of the fast break in the third and fourth quarters, but Dordt was able to hold on for the 11-7 win bringing their record to 1-1. Nate Weigel poured in five goals, two of them off Seth Borchard’s three assists. Mark Opp had two goals. Jesse Anderson, Alex Soundy and Johnson had one goal each.

This week:
The series between Dordt College and Carleton is tied at 2-2 with Carleton taking the most recent contest last year in Rochester, MN 12-5.

Last year, the Knights posted a 4-4 overall record and 2-3 conference record that includes perennial powerhouses St. Thomas and North Dakota State. Saturday’s contest will be Carleton’s first of the 2013 season.

Josh Carson and Rob Yeagle return as the Knight’s top scoring threats. Carson put in 19 goals a year ago. Yeagle scored 16 goals. Billy Shapiro led his team with 15 assists last year and returns at the midfield position. Julian Skotheim, a sophomore, returns as the man between the pipes for the Knights. He finished last year with a .539 save percentage.

Nate Weigel leads Dordt College with six goals and Mark Opp ranks second with two. Midfielder Seth Borchard has registered three assists. Nathan Smith has won five of nine faceoff matchups. Keeper Jordan Yntema looks to build on an impressive performance between the pipes two weeks ago when he registered a .751 save percentage.

Next Up:
The Sowers will be off for two weeks before hosting the Bethel Royals at home on March 23 following spring break.
