Dordt Hosts Hastings Softball Saturday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host Hastings College in Great Plains Athletic Conference softball on Saturday, April 6 starting at 1:00.  The games will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and there will be an audio webcast available at www.dordt.edu/athletics.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Broncos are 2-0 in GPAC play and stand 11-5 overall with a conference sweep over Midland accounting for their only GPAC action thus far.  The Broncos are 6-1 over their last seven games and have had a five game winning streak already this season.

Hastings is batting .325 this season with 73 runs scored against 65 for opponents.  The Broncos feature a 2.61 earned run average opponents are batting .273 against them.

Felicia Graff tops the team with a .386 batting average and 22 hits with three triples and five runs batted in.  Taylor Erlenbusch along with Kayla Mohr and Kelsey Hoehler each have eight runs batted in and three different players have one run batted in each.  Five Hastings regulars feature a .300 or better batting average. 

Erlenbusch is 6-1 on the mound with a 2.10 earned run average and she has struck out 54 batters with seven bases on balls issued.  McKenzie Welchert has a 3.25 earned run average in 47 1/3 innings of work and she is 4-4.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 6-15 this season with a 2-2 conference record.  The Defenders have split a pair of doubleheaders this week with Concordia and Mount Marty.  This will be the first home games of the season.

Dordt is batting .213 this season and have been outscored 144-83.The pitching staff has a 6.48 earned run average and teams are batting .315 against them.

Ashton Beaird is batting .317 this season with 19 hits, six doubles and four homeruns and a team high 15 runs batted in.  Ashley Van Kooten has a .277 batting average to go with 18 hits, three homeruns and 14 runs batted in.  Brittany Kooiker has 14 hits, three doubles and two homeruns.  Haley Huisman has knocked three homeruns as well as the Defenders have hit 14 homeruns as a team.

Sidney Larsen is 5-8 on the mound with a 4.47 earned run average and has struck out 46 batters in 96 2/3 innings of work.

THE SERIES…Hastings holds a slight 16-14 advantage after Dordt swept the April 2012 meetings in Hastings by scores of 1-0 and 2-0.  In the opener the Defenders got the only run of the game on an Ashton Beaird double in the top of the seventh.  Two runs on a Megan Huizenga triple in in the first inning of game two led to Dordt’s shutout sweep.

NEXT UP… Dordt will travel to Northwestern in Orange City on Tuesday, April 9 and will host Dakota State on Saturday, April 12.  The Broncos are scheduled to face Peru State on Sunday, April 7 in a doubleheader that starts at 1:00.
