Dordt Baseball Closes Regular Season This Weekend

GAMETIME… Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Thursday, April 24 at 4:00 and will travel to Northwestern on Friday, April 26 at 1:00.  The doubleheader on Thursday can be heard via a webcast at  Results of the games can be found at when complete and also at

SCOUTING REPORT… The Dakota Wesleyan Tigers are 20-21 this season and 7-9 in conference play and are 1-7 in their last eight games.  Wesleyan has had a stretch of narrow losses with six of their last seven losses coming by one run and the other is a 4-1 loss. 

The Tigers bat .310 as a team and have scored at an average of over six runs per game.  Michael Lukkason hits for a .388 average and has 52 hits with 12 doubles and 28 runs batted in.  Tim Cusick has 49 hits, nine doubles, eight triples, eight homeruns and 56 runs batted in. Erick Nockleby and Toby Kaplan have 29 and 25 runs batted in respectively and Cody Silveria has five homeruns.

Chris Housley, Kyle Larson and Lucas Schultz all have three wins a piece and Housley has a 3.28 earned run average in 46 innings of work.  Housley also has a team high 37 strikeouts to his credit.

Northwestern is 15-1 in the GPAC and 25-14 overall and are riding a nine game winning streak going tino a doubleheader with Morningside on Thursday.  The Raiders have won 13 of their last 14 with the lone blemish a one run loss to Waldorf on April 8.

Northwestern is batting .286 as a team and boast a team earned run average of 3.62.  Corey Van Gorp tops the team with a .398 batting average and has a team high 18 stolen bases.  Davis Bloemendaal leads the tean with 378 runs batted in and has ten doubles—second on the team to Van Gorp’s 14. 

Tyler Stuerman and Ryan Brasser both have 6-2 records with Stuerman holding a 1.00 earned run average in 54 innings of work with 55 strikeouts and 19 bases on balls.  Brasser has a 3.74 earned run average and has 35 strikeouts in 45 innings of work.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 6-21 heading into the final two doubleheaders of the season and is 4-12 in the GPAC.  Dordt has played in 14 one-run games this season and is 5-9 in those games.  The Defenders have played in 19 games decided by two runs or less this season and 14 out of 16 GPAC games have been decided by two runs or less.

Jon Holwerda is batting .310 with 22 hits and eight doubles and Nate Fraley bats .304 with two homeruns and 10 runs batted in with 28 hits.  Mark Nyhoff, Ben Van Kekerix, Jake Slings and Lucas Carls have pitched the majority of the innings for the Defenders.  Nyhoff has a 3.86 earned run average with 25 strikeouts and 35 innings pitched.  Van Kekerix has a 4.00 earned run average to go wth a 3-3 record and 33 strikeouts in 36 innings. Slings and Carls both have 21 strikeouts in 30 innings of work.

THE SERIES…Dordt trails the series with Dakota Wesleyan 44-26 with the Tigers sweeping the doubleheader last year 7-1 and 5-1.  Northwestern leads the series with Dordt dating back to 1966, 96-43.
