Defender Men Earn Scholar-Athlete Honors

(Tuesday, May 28; Sioux Center, Iowa)  The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that 204 men’s track and field student-athletes have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.  Seven Dordt College Defender men’s track and field athletes were on the list.

Seniors on the list included Josh Brinkerhoff (Branchville, New Jersey), Jordan Huisman (Orange City, Iowa) and Ryan Tholen (Tracy, Minnesota).  All three have earned the honor in other sports as well with Brinkerhoff getting on the list for soccer, Huisman in football and Tholen in cross country.

Brinkerhoff is a History/Secondary Education major while Huisman has studied Business Administration.  Tholen majored in Engineering and was on the 4 x 800 meter relay team that claimed All-American honors at the recently completed NAIA National Championships.

Juniors on the list are Tim Bierma (Sioux Center, Iowa), Chris Postma (Sioux Center, Iowa) and Seth Vande Voort (Urbandale, Iowa).  Bierma and Postma also claimed the honor in cross country and Vande Voort in football this fall.

Bierma is studying Agriculture/Biology while Postma is majoring in Health-Human Performance.  Vande Voort is an Exercise Science/Sports Management major.  Bierma was also on the 4 x 800 team with Tholen that claimed NAIA All-American honors.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.
