Pizza Ranch Soccer Classic Concludes Saturday

GAMETIME… Dordt College will host John Brown (Arkansas) on Saturday, August 30.  The men’s game with starts at 1:00 and the women will start at 3:00.  The games can be heard on a webcast at www.dordt.edu/athletics and results will be posted on www.dordt.edu/athletics ; https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders and https://twitter.com/dcathletics .

SCOUTING REPORT… The John Brown women are opening the season this weekend as part of the Pizza Ranch Classic.  Last year’s edition went 9-6-2 and ended the season with a loss to Oklahoma City 1-0 in post-season play.  The Golden Eagles outscored teams 30-18 and return two players, Whitney Brannan and Laura Garcia, who both scored six goals last season.  Casey O’Brien is back after knocking five in and she had two assists.  Kristen Morency returns after playing 1,550 minutes in goal and allowed a 1.05 goals per-90 minutes played average and she made 88 saves.

The Golden Eagle men are 0-1 this season with a loss to Oklahoma Wesleyan earlier this week.  John Brown was 11-5-2 last season and posted a 4-3-1 record in the Sooner Athletic Conference.  Ryan Duncan returns for a team that outscored teams 36-20 and outshot teams on goal 127-114.  Eli Simonsen scored seven goals and had two assists last season while Zari Prescod had six goals and Martin Gonzalez five.  Pablo Garcia returns to play in goal where he logged 1,584 minutes last season and had a 1.14 goals per-90 minutes played average. 

DORDT COLLEGE NOTES… The Defender women will be playing in their season opener after posting a 1-14-3 record.  The Defenders fought to ties with Waldorf, Mount Mercy and Dakota Wesleyan while beating AIB. 

Sarah Byron scored four goals for the Defenders and is back for her senior season.  Megan Knapper scored twice and returns and Marissa Le Duc had three assists in 2012. 

The Defender men are 0-1-0 after a loss to Mount Mercy last week.  In 2012 the Defenders were 10-8-1 and finished the GPAC season with a mark of 6-3-1.  Dordt lost in a quarterfinal round GPAC Tournament contest to end the 2012 season.

The Defenders outscored teams 47-31 and outshot teams 149-132. 

Dordt returns its top 2012 goal scorer in Eric Grootenboer, a Chatham, Ontario native, found the net 11 times and also assisted on four goals.  Brady Van Holland was the leading assist man for Dordt last season with eight and scored six times and earned all-GPAC honors at the conclusion of the season.  Steven Talsma also scored four times and had two assists.  Jon Brinkerhoff played all 1,742 available minutes in goal and allowed a 1.60 goal average per 90 minutes played and he also made 92 saves.

THE SERIES… This will be the first meeting between Dordt and John Brown in both women’s and men’s soccer.

LAST TIME… This weekend marks the season opener for the Dordt women and for the John Brown women. 

The Dordt men lost a 1-0 decision to Mount Mercy on Saturday, August 23 in their only previous action to this weekend.  Dordt had a chance to tie the game late in the first half on a penalty kick that ended up ringing off the post.  Dordt was outshot on goal by a 7-3 margin. 

The John Brown men lost to Oklahoma Wesleyan by a 5-2 margin on August 26.  Marco Cardona and Misha Kolemasov each had a goal in the loss and Pablo Garcia had five saves while making six saves.  John Brown was outshot on goal 11-2.

NEXT UP…… The Defender men and women will host Columbia (Missouri) on Saturday, September 7.

John Brown will play against Concordia on September 6 in their next competition and the women will face Abilene Christian that same day.
