GPAC Volleyball Opener Saturday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will open GPAC play on Saturday, September 14 at Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa. The junior varsity match starts at 6:00 with the varsity contest beginning at 7:30.The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the internet at www.dordt.edu/athletics. THE OPPONENT… Briar Cliff is 9-3 this season and has gone 3-3 over its last six matches. Losses for Briar Cliff are to Texas-Brownsville, Rocky Mountain and Baker.
The Chargers average 13.7 kills per set and have a team kill efficiency of .231. The Chargers get 1.45 points per set off of ace serves and 1.55 on blocks. The Chargers also get to 15.5 digs per outing.
The catalyst for the Charger offense is setter Erin Frank with an 11.14 assists per set average. Monica Boeding has an average of 4.1 kills per outing and Jenna Berg is at 2.4 kills per set. Brooke Maguire and Breanna Nogelmeier average just under two kills per set at 1.9 each. Amy Frank tops the team with 14 ace serves and she averages 4.0 digs per set. Boeding’s dig average is 3.4 and Dani Helland is at 2.8.
THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 8-2 this season and has won five matches in a row since back to back 3-2 losses to Tabor and Viterbo.
The Defenders have a .294 team kill efficiency and a 13.4 kills per set average. Dordt gets to 17.5 digs per set and gets 2.2 points per set off blocks and 1.5 on service aces.
Gesink averages 10.2 assists per set with 1.2 kills and 2.9 digs per outing. Brooke Wolterstorff is averaging 3.0 kills per set with a .251 kill efficiency. Lindsey Floen is good for 2.9 kills and a .434 kill efficiency and she averages just over a block per set. Jenna Horstman and Meghan Krausman have helped the balanced Dordt attack with 2.7 and 2.1 kills respectively and Elizabeth Kiel is contributing 1.4 kills per set. Kayla Broekhuis tops the team with a 5.3 dig average and she shares team honors in ace serves this season with Celaine Haan at 11. Wolterstorff has 10 ace serves and a 3.2 dig average.
LAST ACTION… Briar Cliff split two matches on Saturday, September 7 beating Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 25-18, 25-12, 25-20 and losing to Texas Brownsville 25-17, 25-16, 27-25. In the win over Our Lady of the Lake the Chargers got ten kills from Boeding and 29 assists by Franke with eight digs. The Chargers also had nine ace serves in the match.
Dordt hosted Grand View (Iowa) and York (Nebraska) on Saturday and scored a 3-1 win over Grand View by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23 and beat York 25-8, 25-18, 25-10. The win by Dordt over Grand View came with balance at the net as Horstman and Wolterstorff both had 11 kills and Floen had 10 and was in on nine blocks. Gesink put up 42 assists in the four set win and Broekhuis had 16 digs.
HISTORY… Dordt leads the series 33-5 with one of the Briar Ciff wins coming in the GPAC Tournament last season. The Chargers won 25-22, 31-29, 29-27 to advance to the semifinal round. Boeding had 13 kills for Briar Cliff and Frank had 39 assists. Dordt was topped by Krausman and Danae Geels with ten kills each and Floen had nine. Broekhuis got to 20 digs and Gesink had 28 assists.
RANKINGS… Dordt moved into the NAIA Top-25 this week and stands no. 21 overall.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE…Dordt will start a three match homestand on Wednesday, September 18 when it hosts Morningside. The Chargers are scheduled to travel to Mitchell, South Dakota on September 17 and will face Dakota Wesleyan.
