Blades Face Hawkeyes At Home On Friday and Saturday

The puck drops at…7:30 pm on Friday, October 18 and again at 4:15 pm on Saturday,  October 19  as the Blades take on the University of Iowa Hawkeyes in an  MACHA Silver West conference match-up.

The Opponent…the Iowa Hawkeyes are off to a rough start, losing their first six games of the season, with pairs of losses to Bradley University (15-0 and 6-2), Illinois State University (6-3 and 5-2) and Aurora University (8-0 and 10-0).  The Hawkeyes have been outscored 50-7 on the year.

James Hautala leads the Hawkeyes in scoring with four points on a goal and three assists.  Nikko Ebbole, Austin Gibson and James Scott all have two points with Ebbole and Gibson both finding the back of the net twice, while Scott has a goal and an assist.

Andy Michols has spent 213 minutes between the pipes for Iowa and has a 7.58 goals against average and a .520 save percentage.

The Blades…are 2-0 on the young season, picking up wins over Augustana (IL) last weekend by scores of 4-1 and 7-2.

Dylan Van Dyk leads the team with five points on two goals and a team high three assists.  Nic Enerson has four points with a team high three goals to go along with one assist.

Ross Van Gaalen and Riley Braun both have wins in goal for the Blades with Van Gaalen picking up the win in the season opener.

Van Gaalen boasts a 1.00 goals against average and a .940 save percentage in his one outing while Braun has a GAA of 2.00 and a .910 save percentage.

The Series…the Blades and Hawkeyes have squared off only four times in the past ten years with all four contests being lopsided.  In 2009, the Blades beat Iowa by a score of 13-2 and 8-1 while the Hawkeyes won both games last season by a five goal margin,  7-2 and 5-0.

Last time out…the Hawkeyes were on the receiving end of two shut-out losses to Aurora University, 8-0 and 10-0. 

The Dordt College Blades picked up a sweep over Augustana with a 7-2 win over the Vikings on Saturday, October 12.

The Blades took a 2-0 lead in to the first intermission with goals from Levi Minderhoud and Nic Enerson.
Augustana rallied to score the first two goals of the second period to tie the game at 2-2 but Dordt freshman blueliner Lucas Koomans got the eventual game winner on an assist from Eric Huitsing and the Blades extended their lead to 4-2 with a goal from Alex Ten Napel.

Three straight goals by Crich, Huitsing and Enerson put the game out of reach as the Blades grabbed the 7-2 victory. ahead by the final of 7-2.

Enerson ended the night with two goals, bringing his season total to three. Eric Huitsing had a goal and an assist for two points, and Van Dyk and Prins both had two assists. Riley Braun made 21 saves in goal for the Blades and is now 1-0 on the season.

New conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division.  Western Conference schools include:
Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Nebraska and Dordt.

The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots determined by winning percentage. 

The Coaches…John Langeraap begins his first year as Head Coach of the Blades after serving for four years as an assistant.  Langeraap helped the Blades to their third straight American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) D3 National Tournament in 2010 and has been involved with hockey for more than 40 years. Langeraap was
involved with the Sioux Center Hockey Association (SCHA) at its inception in 2003, and he has served as the association’s board president while also coaching at multiple levels in the SCHA prior to becoming an assistant for the Dordt Blades.

Langeraap will be assisted by Jon Gesink.
