Dordt-Northwestern Volleyball Wednesday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Orange City, Iowa for GPAC  volleyball on Wednesday,  November 6. The junior varsity match will start at 6:00 and the varsity match will get underway at 7:30.  The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the web at www.dordt.edu/athletics.   Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

GOLD RUSH…Dordt fans are encouraged to wear gold or yellow for tonight’s match at the Bultman Center on Northwestern’s campus.

THE OPPONENT…  Northwestern is ranked no.  5 in the latest Tachikara-NAIA Coaches’ Poll and has won 29 matches in a row since an opening weekend loss to Tabor (Kansas) at the classic Northwestern hosts early in the year each season.  Northwestern has been pushed to five sets in contests with Tabor, Great Falls (Montana), Oklahoma Baptist, Texas Wesleyan, Doane, Dordt and Midland (twice).  Northwestern has already wrapped up the regular season title in the GPAC and the no. 1 seed that goes with it in the eight-team post-season tournament.

The Raiders average 13.4 kills per set and have a team kill efficiency of .284.  Northwestern gets 2.2 points per contest on blocks and another 1.64 service aces.  Kyle Van Den Bosch’s team gets to 15.02 digs per outing.

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the team with 3.76 kills per contest with a .239 kill efficiency and she has a team high 65 service aces with 2.65 digs per contest.  Karli Schut averages 3.72 kills per outing and has a .274 kill efficiency and she has 38 service aces.  Kellie Goedken and Haley Chambers each average slightly better than two kills per set and Brooke Fessler puts up 10.58 assists per set.  The top digger for Northwestern is Alexis Bart with a 4.19 average per set.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 21-5 this season and stand 12-3 in the GPAC with this match remaining.  A win by the Defenders against Northwestern puts them in the no. 2 spot in the post-season tournament while a loss could drop them as far as no. 4 in the standings.    The Defenders have won four matches in a row and ten of their last eleven decisions.    Dordt has played in four matches that have gone five sets and are 1-3 in those contests.

Dordt averages 13.67 kills per set and has a team kill efficiency of .296.  Much like Northwestern, the Defenders get over two points per contest on blocks and 1.4 points per set on service aces while getting to 16.2 digs per contest.

Brooke Wolterstorff puts away 3.0 kills per set and gets to 2.6 digs and has 28 service aces.  Jenna Horstman and Lindsey Floen each have 2.9 kill averages and Floen records 1.1 blocks per contest and has a kill efficiency of .396.  Meghan Krausman is good for 1.9 kills while Elizabeth Kiel and adds 1.6 and Kayla Gesink 1.1.  Gesink is the setter and averages 10.6 assists and 2.4 digs.  Kayla Broekhuis has a team high average of 5.1 digs and Celaine Haan leads the team with 30 ace serves.  Jocelyn Broekhuis is averaging 1.7 digs and has 25 service aces.

LAST ACTION… Northwestern beat Midland 20-25, 28-26, 26-24, 17-25, 15-10 in Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday to clinch the GPAC Championship.  Northwestern hit .315 for the match and got nine points off of blocks.  Northwestern was led at the net by Floerchinger’s 22 kills while Chambers and Goedken had 13 and 12 respectively.  Fessler put up 51 assists and she had 14 digs to top the team.

Dordt swept Doane 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 and hit for a .226 kill efficiency and had 62 digs with six points on blocks.  The Defenders were led by Krausman’s ten digs while Floen had eight and Gesink and Horstman each had seven.  Gesink had 28 assists and Broekhuis got to a match high 25 digs.

HISTORY… The Defenders lead the series 25-15 in matches played since 1998.

This year’s first match was played in a hot and muggy De Witt Gym with Northwestern prevailing 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10.  Dordt was led by Floen and Wolterstorff with 20 kills each and Gesink put up 60 assists.  Broekhuis and Siri Nelson  had 11 and ten digs respectively.  Floerchinger had a match 23 kills for the winners and Schut had 17 with Fessler putting up 52 assists while Bart had 22 digs in the September 24 match.

Last year’s meetings were split with each team winning at home in five sets.  Dordt won the September 26 meeting by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 18-25, 25-27, 15-9.  Katelyn Schuller had 14 kills and Danae Geels 13 while Krausman put down 10.  Gesink put up 37 assists and Broekhuis had 18 digs.  Floerchinger recorded 17 kills and Schut 11.  Floerchinger also had 13 assists and a service ace.

The match at Northwestern on November 1 went to the Raiders by scores of 27-29, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 15-7.  Schuller had 14 kill sand Floen 13 in the loss while Gesink put up 39 assists. Broekhuis had a match high 31 digs.  Northwestern was topped by Floerchinger with 17 kills and she had 26 assists and 12 digs.  Schut was good for 12 kills and 12 digs and Bart had a team high 17 digs.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… The pairings for the GPAC Post-Season Tournament will be released late Wednesday night.  Both Dordt and Northwestern will host matches on Saturday, November 9 in the quarterfinal round.  The semifinal round will be played on Wednesday, November 13 with the Championship scheduled for Saturday, November 16.

NAIA POLL…Dordt College is no. 16 in this week’s poll while fellow GPAC members Northwestern and Midland are no. 6 and no. 7 respectively.  Hastings is in the receiving votes category of the poll.
