Dordt-Northwestern Volleyball Part III

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will travel to Orange City, Iowa for GPAC  semifinal  volleyball on Wednesday,  November 13.   The match will begin at 7:30 and can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the web at www.dordt.edu/athletics.   Results will be posted to www.dordt.edu/athletics and https://twitter.com/dcathletics and also at https://www.facebook.com/dordtdefenders .

GOLD RUSH...Dordt fans are encouraged to wear gold for the match at the Bultman Center.

THE OPPONENT…  Northwestern is ranked no.  5 in the latest Tachikara-NAIA Coaches’ Poll and has won 31 matches in a row since an opening weekend loss to Tabor (Kansas) at the classic Northwestern hosts early in the year each season. 

Northwestern has been pushed to five sets in contests with Tabor, Great Falls (Montana), Oklahoma Baptist, Texas Wesleyan, Doane, Dordt (twice) and Midland (twice).  Northwestern won the regular season title in the GPAC and took the no. 1 seed that goes with it in the eight-team post-season tournament.

The Raiders average 13.4 kills per set and have a team kill efficiency of .281.  Northwestern gets 2.2 points per contest on blocks and another 1.69 service aces.  Kyle Van Den Bosch’s team gets to 15 digs per outing.

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the team with 3.75 kills per contest with a .234 kill efficiency and she has a team high 73 service aces with 2.95 digs per contest.  Karli Schut averages 3.77 kills per outing and has a .274 kill efficiency and she has 39 service aces.  Kellie Goedken and Haley Chambers each average slightly better than two kills per set and Brooke Fessler puts up 10.56 assists per set.  The top digger for Northwestern is Alexis Bart with a 4.17 average per set.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt is 22-6 this season and finished 12-4 in the GPAC.  The Defenders have won 11 of the their last 13 decisions.  

Dordt averages 13.48 kills per set and has a team kill efficiency of .293.  Much like Northwestern, the Defenders get over two points per contest on blocks and 1.4 points per set on service aces while getting to 15.9 digs per contest.

Brooke Wolterstorff puts away 3.0 kills per set and gets to 2.5 digs and has 28 service aces.  Jenna Horstman and Lindsey Floen have 2.9 and 2.8 kills respectively.    Floen records 1.1 blocks per contest and has a kill efficiency of .371.  Meghan Krausman is good for 1.9 kills while Elizabeth Kiel and adds 1.6 and Kayla Gesink 1.1.  Gesink is the setter and averages 10.4 assists and 2.4 digs.  Kayla Broekhuis has a team high average of 5.1 digs and Celaine Haan leads the team with 32 ace serves.  Jocelyn Broekhuis is averaging 1.7 digs and has 27 service aces.

LAST ACTION… Northwestern defeated Morningside on November 9 by a 25-19, 25-14, 25-13 margin. Schut had 15 kills and Fessler 32 assists with 14 digs.

Dordt dropped Briar Cliff 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 in the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Saturday.  Dordt got 12 kilsl by Horstman and ten by Wolterstorff.  Gesink had 34 assists and Broekhuis got to 13 digs with Bousema recording two ace serves.

HISTORY… The Defenders lead the series 25-16 in matches played since 1998.

This year’s first match was played in a hot and muggy De Witt Gym with Northwestern prevailing 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10.  Dordt was led by Floen and Wolterstorff with 20 kills each and Gesink put up 60 assists.  Broekhuis and Siri Nelson  had 11 and ten digs respectively.  Floerchinger had a match 23 kills for the winners and Schut had 17 with Fessler putting up 52 assists while Bart had 22 digs in the September 24 match.

The second meeting, played on Wednesday, November 6, was won by Northwestern 20-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 16-14.  Dordt was topped by Brooke Wolterstorff’s 16 kills and Jenna Horstman had 11 kills and Meghan Krausman had 10.  Kayla Gesink put up 38 assists and Kayla Broekhuis had 25 digs.  Northwestern was topped by Karlie Schut with 23 kills and Kaitlin Floerchinger added 20 kills with 20 digs and six aces. Brooke Fessler put up 51 assists and Alexis Bart had 20 digs.

Last year’s meetings were split with each team winning at home in five sets.  Dordt won the September 26 meeting by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 18-25, 25-27, 15-9.  Katelyn Schuller had 14 kills and Danae Geels 13 while Krausman put down 10.  Gesink put up 37 assists and Broekhuis had 18 digs.  Floerchinger recorded 17 kills and Schut 11.  Floerchinger also had 13 assists and a service ace.

The match at Northwestern on November 1 went to the Raiders by scores of 27-29, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 15-7.  Schuller had 14 kill sand Floen 13 in the loss while Gesink put up 39 assists.  Broekhuis had a match high 31 digs.  Northwestern was topped by Floerchinger with 17 kills and she had 26 assists and 12 digs.  Schut was good for 12 kills and 12 digs and Bart had a team high 17 digs.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE… The winner of this match will play the winner of the Midland-Doane match played in Fremont, Nebraska on Wednesday night.  The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, November 16.  The GPAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament which opens with first round play on Saturday, November 23.

NAIA POLL…Dordt College is no. 16 in this week’s poll while fellow GPAC members Northwestern and Midland are no. 6 and no. 7 respectively.  Hastings is in the receiving votes category of the poll.
