Blades Host Cyclones On Friday and Saturday

The games…the Dordt Blades return to conference action this weekend when they take on the Iowa State Cyclones in a pair of contests scheduled for Friday, November 15 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, November 16 at 4:15 pm. Both games will be played in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa. Dordt College comes in to the game with a 2-9 record overall and 0-4 in the MACHA and are looking to snap a nine game skid while the Cyclones enter with a 5-3 mark on the year and are 1-1 in conference play.
The Opponent…the ‘Clones are 1-3 on the road and sit in fifth place in the MACHA Silver West standings, they have 38 goals for with 25 against. Their lone two conference games are against the University of Nebraska and the two teams split their games, with Nebraska taking the first one 3-2 while ISU edged out the Huskers 5-4 in the second contest.
Kean Ludvicek leads the Cyclones with 12 points on a team high seven goals to go along with five assists; Kyle Castle and Johnny Domina both have nine points.
Reid McMahon and Jake Petsch have shared the netminding responsibilities with McMahon earning a 1-2 record between the pipes with a 2.74 goals against average and a .900 save percentage while Petsch has an unblemished 3-0 record with a GAA of 3.27 and a .820 save percentage.
The Blades…are 2-9 this season and are 0-4 in conference play having lost their last nine outings.
Nic Enerson leads the Blades with nine points with a team high seven goals to go along with two assists. Dylan Van Dyk has eight points on three goals and a team-high five assists. Eric Huitsing and David Prins both have six points and Kevin Vermeer and Lucas Koomans each have five.
Riley Braun is 1-8 in goal for the Blades and has a 5.21 goals against average with a save percentage of .869. The senior netminder has made 304 saves in his nine outings. Ross Van Gaalen has played two games in goal and is 1-1 on the year with a 3.43 GAA and a .929 save percentage, turning away 96 shots on the year.
History…the Blades and Cyclones have played 28 times since 2003 with the Cyclones enjoying a slight 15-13 advantage over Dordt in those contests. Iowa State has won the last five games against the Blades including a pair of 7-1 wins last season.
Last time out…the Dordt College Blades were shut-out twice on the road against Aurora University, dropping the first contest 5-0 and the second 6-0. In Saturday’s (November 9) outing the Blades and the Spartans skated to a scoreless first period but the Blades surrendered three second period goals and another three in the third frame to fall 6-0. The Spartans improved to 14-1 on the year with the victory.
Bryce Stenstrom picked up a hat trick for the Spartans with a pair of goals in the second period and another in the third.
Dordt's netminder, Ross Van Gaalen, had a fantastic first period in goal for the Blades, turning away 22 shots in the opening frame before giving up a goal five minutes in to the second period. In all, Van Gaalen had 60 saves on the evening and is now 1-1 in goal on the year.
The Blades were 0-4 on the power play while the Spartans were 1-3.
Conference affiliation…the Dordt Blades have joined the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) which has schools in two separate divisions (Gold and Silver) and Dordt College will be a part of the Silver Division. Western Conference schools include: Iowa, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Missouri State (D3), Nebraska and Dordt.
The top two teams from the North, Central and West will make the playoffs, plus 2 wild card spots determined by winning percentage.
