Dordt College/Holiday Inn Express Basketball Preview

GAMETIME…The Dordt College men’s basketball team will host the Dordt College/Holiday Inn Express Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 28 and 29 at the De Witt Gym. Friday’s play begins at 6:00 with Northwestern (Iowa) vrs Central (Iowa) and the 8:00 game features Dordt vrs AIB. The Saturday games start at 2:00 with Northwestern playing AIB and the 4:00 game has Dordt vrs Central. The games involving Dordt can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the world wide web at www.dordt.edu/athletics along with a video/audio webstream. The games not involving Dordt will feature a live video webstream with no audio commentary. SCOUTING REPORT… AIB is 0-7 this season and are 0-4 against Great Plains Athletic Conference teams with losses to Doane, Hastings, Dordt, Briar Cliff and Northwestern.
The Eagles convert 43.9 percent of their field goals and opponents are making 52.4 percent of their field goals. AIB Is getting outrebounded 41.9-30.1.
Brandon Eley is averaging a team high 17.6 points per game while making 51.9 percent of his field goals and Darryl Stewart has scored 13.3 points per game in three games. Jason Cameron is good for 9.6 points per game and Brandon Rosales is at 7.0 points per game. Stewart tops the team with 6.7 rebounds per game.
Central is 2-0 this season and average 91 points per game while giving up 65.5. Central’s wins are over Monmouth and Eureka.
The Dutch are making 50.4 percent of their field goals and 40 percent of their three-point shots. Central has outrebounded opponents 49.5-44.
Kevin Kaerwer is scoring 19 points with five rebounds and Matt Greenfield is averaging 17 points per game with 11 rebounds and he is making 50 percent of his field goals. Nile Eckerman and Fred Pratt average 9.0 and 8.5 points per game and Spencer Bakerink is at a 9.0 points per game average.
Northwestern is 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the GPAC with losses to Briar Cliff, Hastings and Morningside in the league. The Raiders are averaging 76.9 points per game and allow 76.3 points per outing.
Northwestern is outrebounding teams 41.9-36.4 and have committed 177 turnovers this season while forcing 151.
Zack Leeper leads the team with 15.6 points per game and he takes down 5.2 rebounds per game. Jordan Baker adds 12.2 points per game and is converting 55.9 percent of his field goals and Joey Habtemariam contributes 10.2 points per contest.
DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is out to an 8-1 start overall and a 3-0 league mark with conference wins over Midland, Doane and Mount Marty. The Defenders have won five games in a row since a loss to nationally ranked Davenport.
Dordt has outscored teams 92.7-77.6 and are outrebounding teams 43.7-28.7. Dordt is also making 51.3 percent of its field goals while opponents are making 45.5 percent of the shots they take.
Kyle Lindbergh is good for 20.2 points and 10.9 rebounds per game and is making 65.5 percent of his field goal attempts. He also has an average of over two assists, one block and one steal per game. Austin Katje is averaging 14.4 points per game and has made 49.4 percent of his three-point attempts. Dalton Franken adds 14.2 poitns per outing and Tyler Wolterstorff’s average is 11.1. Nathan Rindel leads the team with 4.3 assists per game and has an 8.6 scoring average while Alex Terpstra is at 7.4 points per game and David Den Herder’s average is 5.6. Three players average more than four rebounds a game.
LAST TIME… AIB lost an 82-79 decision to Northwestern in Des Moines on November 23. The Eagles came from nine points down at halftime to tie it at 70-70. Northwestern outscored the hosts 12-9 in the extra session. AIB got 31 points from Eley and 12 by Tre Brown. Northwestern committed 21 turnovers and committed 16. Northwestern took advantage of 18-29 field goal shooting while AIB was 8-17.
Central beat Eureka 108-68. The Dutch hit for 59 percent success including 65 percent in the second half while holding a 54-34 rebounding edge. Kevin Kaerwer scored 22 points and Greenfield had 15 points and 14 rebounds with five assists.
Northwestern lost to Morningside 88-70 on Tuesday night at the Bultman Center. Northwestern committed 17 turnovers while forcing eight and held a slight 37-33 rebounding edge. Jordan Baker topped Northwestern with 12 and Habtemariam and Leeper each had 11 points.
Dordt College handled Mount Marty 100-60 on Tuesday night. Dordt had a huge 57-25 rebounding advantage and was led by Lindbergh’s 20 points and 13 rebounds. Dalton Franken added 15 and Austin Katje had 14 in a game that Dordt started with a 12-0 run. A 15 point midway through the first half pushed the lead over 25 and the game was never close after that.
HISTORY… Dordt is 2-0 against AIB with a win earlier this year by a 94-65 margin. Dordt was led by Dalton Franken and Kyle Lindbergh with 24 and 23 points respectively. Austin Katje added 13 points for the Defenders in the November 12 meeting. Darryl Stewart had 20 points in his first action of the season for AIB.
NEXT… All four teams resume play on December 4 with AIB hosting Simpson while Central goes to William Penn. Northwestern and Dordt pick up GPAC play that same day when they host Mount Marty and Briar Cliff respectively.
RANKINGS…. The first NAIA Division II basketball polls were released on October 29. The women’s poll is dominated by GPAC teams with Morningside no. 3; Concordia no. 5, Northwestern no. 7; Briar Cliff no. 12 and Dakota Wesleyan are receiving votes.
The men’s poll features Midland at no. 8, Northwestern at no. 15 and Hastings at no. 23. Morningside is in the receiving votes category of the poll.
