Dordt-Briar Cliff Basketball Wednesday

SCOUTING REPORT… The Briar Cliff women are 5-8 in the GPAC and 12-11 overall.  The Chargers started the season with four wins in a row and they were 8-2 after an overtime win over Dordt on December 4.  Since then the Chargers are 4-9 and they have lost three games in a row to Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings.  Briar Cliff’s most recent win was a 75-67 win at Dakota State on January 15.

The Chargers score 79.9 points per game and allow 80.3 points per contest while getting outrebounded 41.7-44.0.  Briar Cliff converts 41.0 percent of its field goals and 31.2 percent of its three-point shots.  The Chargers allow opponents to make 41.4 percent of its field goals and 31.7 percent of the three-point shots taken.  Briar Cliff has turned the ball over 535 times in 23 games while opponents have turned it over 572 times.

Slone Masters is the top scorer with a 15.0 points per game average and she takes down 6.5 rebounds per game.  She averages just over two assists per game and 1.3 blocked shots with nearly three steals per outing.  Kaylee Blake is good for 10.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds and she averages a steal and an assist per contest.  Summer Gordon and Morgan Hansen each average 7.5 points per game and Lexi Henschke is at 7.0 points per game.

The Briar Cliff men are 14-9 overall and 7-6 in the GPAC.  The Chargers started the season with a 2-2 mark and then ripped off six wins in a row before falling three times in succession to Bellevue, Dordt and Hastings from November 30-December 7.  Since then the Chargers are 6-4 and they’ve lost two games in a row to Dakota Wesleyan (84-81) and Hastings (72-66).

The Chargers are scoring 83.7 points per game and allow 78.7 points per outing and they hold a 35.2-33.8 rebounding edge.  The Chargers make 47.8 percent of their field goals and 37.8 percent of their three-point shots.  Teams are shooting for a 46.7 percent success rate against the Chargers.  Briar Cliff has converted 523-699 free throws while opponents are 383-544.

Zach Otting scores 19.5 points per game with 4.1 rebounds and he is making 49.3 percent of his shots.  Clayton Harreld is adding 12.5 points per game and he has 32 assists.  Bryan Forbes and Ricky Torres score 9.4 and 7.7 points per game.  Shane Graves and Ricky Williams add 7.0 and 6.6 points per game and Graves has a team high 65 assists in 22 games played.  The Chargers have 11 players who have played in 18 games or more this season.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 11-11 this season and 5-9 in league play.  Dordt started the season with a 6-2 mark before a loss to Briar Cliff started a four game slide.  The Defenders are 4-5 since Christmas and are on a two game winning streak. 

Dordt is paced by Kara Van Dyke’s 14.0 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per outing.  Van Dyke makes 47.2 percent of her field goal tries.  Jaimie Kok has a 10.7 points per game average to go with 6.3 rebounds and she has played in 17 games this year.  Kayla Broekhuis has a 10.3 points per game average in 12 games and she is converting 50.6 percent of her field goals and he averages 3.8 rebounds.  Danelle Boone has steadily raised her scoring average to 8.7 points per game and Jasmin Schelhaas is scoring 6.4 points per outing.  The Defenders have been without Elise Maresh for the last nine games as she’s been sidelined by injury.  Maresh was averaging 16.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game before Christmas.

The Defenders average 72.4 points per game and allow 71.1 points per contest.  Dordt is converting 42.6 percent of its shots and limit opponents to 38.8 percent success.  Dordt is getting outrebounded by a slight 38.8-37.9 average and they’ve turned it over 399 times to 375 for opponents.

The Defender men are 21-2 this season and stand 12-1 in the GPAC.  Dordt has won five games in a row since having a 13 game winning streak stopped on January 8.  The Defenders have seven games remaining in the regular season.

Dordt has a 90.2 points per game average and the Defenders convert 49.7 percent of the field goals they take.  The Defenders also outrebound teams 42.1-30.3.  Opponents are scoring 75.6 points per game and are making 44.3 percent of the field goals they take.  Dordt has scored 90 or more points in a game 15 times.  Dordt has converted 481-664 free throws to 343-470 for opponents.

Kyle Lindbergh scores 16.7 points per game and takes down 10.5 rebounds per contest.  He’s averaged 2.7 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.1steals per game and he makes 52.8 percent of his field goals.  Dalton Franken is scoring 16.2 points per game while converting 48.4 percent of his field goals and he takes in 4.4 rebounds per game.  Austin Katje is good for 13.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per outing.  Nathan Rindels is scoring 11.0 points per game and takes down 5.0 rebounds with 3.5 assists.  Tyler Wolterstorff completes the double digit scoring with a 10.9 average and he gets to 4.3 rebounds per game.  David Den Herder and Alex Terpstra are scoring 6.7 and 6.0 points per game and Bryan Sumner’s average is at 4.2 points per outing.

LAST TIME… The Defender women beat Dakota State 97-70 behind 37-67 shooting from the field.  Dordt was up 39-19 at halftime and was led by Kara Van Dyke’s 24 points and nine rebounds.  Jaimie Kok scored 14 and had 10 rebounds with seven assists and Jasmin Schelhaas scored 13.

Hastings beat the Briar Cliff women 76-72 on Saturday.  Slone Masters and McKenzie Shipley both had 15 points and Alex Fuller 11 while Kaylee Blake came off the bench to score nine.

The Defender men were 98-90 winners over Dakota State on Saturday after leading 57-50.  Dordt got 32 points from Dalton Franken as he converted 10-21 field goals and 12-12 free throws.  Tyler Wolterstorff scored 19 and Kyle Lindbergh added 17 and Austin Katje 16.  Katje had seven rebounds and was 6-6 from the free throw line. 

The  Briar Cliff men trailed Hastings by 17 points with eight minutes to go on Saturday, took a one point lead with just over three minutes to go, before falling 72-66.  Bryan Forbes scored 19 and had ten rebounds in the loss while Zach Otting added 12 and Austin Lefler 10.  Ricky Williams and Shane Graves both had eight points.

HISTORY… The Briar Cliff women lead the series 42-37 and they won a 100-92 overtime decision on December 4 at the De Witt Gym.  Kara Van Dyke and Elise Maresh had 23 and 22 respectively for the Defenders while Danelle Boone had 13.  Briar Cliff was paced by Slone Masters with 27 and Regan Cooper scored 18 with 11 rebounds.  The game was tied 83-83 at the end of regulation.

The Defender men won a 104-97 decision over Briar Cliff on December 4 to close the series to 56-34 in Briar Cliff’s favor.  Dalton Franken led the Defenders with 24 points and Nathan Rindels added 21 with 11 rebounds and three assists.  Austin Katje and Tyler Wolterstorff had 14 each and David Den Herder came off the bench to score 16.  Ricky Williams and Zach Otting had 28 and 20 respectively and Austin Homan came off the bench to score 10 with six rebounds.  The game was tied 87-87 at the end of regulation.

NEXT… The Chargers have a week off before traveling to Northwestern on Wednesday, February 5.

The Defenders continue their week of road games with a doubleheader at Hastings on Saturday, February 1.

RANKINGS….The Defender men hold the no. 5 spot in the poll with 328 points.  Midland and Hastings are no. 7 and no. 13 respectively and Morningside is receiving votes.  Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) is the no. 1 team again this week in the poll.

Five GPAC teams are in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday, January 28.  Northwestern is no. 2; Hastings no. 7; Concordia no. 9; Morningside no. 10; Dakota Wesleyan no. 25.  The University of St. Francis is no. 1 in this week’s polling done by 14 coaches across the country.

MILESTONES…Kara Van Dyke went over 1,200 career points last week and currently has 1,215 which ranks seventh all-time behind Jacque Van Leeuwen’s 1,246 and Serena Van Beek’s 1,280.  Jaimie Kok is closing in on 800 points and has 791 which is 24th all-time.  Van Dyke is currently tied with Amber Soodsma for fourth all-time in rebounding with 733 and Anita Tinklenberg has 809 in third.  Kok has 396 and ranks 25th behind Kelsie De Nooy’s 402.  Kok has 176 assists which ranks 21st and Kara Van Dyke has 131 steals which puts her in 16th place all-time.

Austin Katje set a new career mark in three-point shots made on Saturday and he has 232 career three-point baskets to Cliff Warner’s 231.  Katje also moved past Eric Maas for 10th all-time in scoring with 1,296 points.  Kyle Lindbergh has 1,196 points and ranks 17th behind Brad Boer’s 1,204 and Kyle Van Arendonk’s 1,210.  Lindbergh has also gone over 800 career rebounds with 837 and ranks 2nd.  Lindbergh also has 260 assists which ranks 10th behind Evan Beimers with 273 and Jason Nikkel with 274.  Lindbergh’s steal total is 152 which is tied with Tracy Winkle for fourth and he trails Kevin Gesink in third with 175.
