Dordt-Hastings Basketball Saturday

SCOUTING REPORT… The Hastings women enter the game with an 11-2 GPAC record and a 20-2 overall mark and they have won 14 games in a row with their last setback coming at the hands of Morningside on November 23. The Broncos have been involved in just four games during that stretch that have been decided by single digits.  Hastings’s two losses are to Northwestern (99-83) and Morningside (76-49).

The Broncos have managed to outscore teams 78.4-67.7 and they hold a 40.2-36.5 rebounding edge.  Hastings takes care of the ball well with just 327 turnovers in 22 games while forcing 454.  The Broncos have converted 41.6 percent of their shots and opponents have made 40.9 percent.  The Broncos rely heavily on their ability to get more shots than their opponents, averaging 67 shots per game to 56 for their foes.

Jamie Van Kirk scores 17.3 points per game and 4.3 rebounds and Cami Bruckman is scoring 16.0 points per game with 5.0 rebounds.  Laurel Zwiener is scoring 14.9 points per game and 7.4 rebounds and she is converting over 48 percent of her field goals.  Shanelle Farmer and Abby Jackson scored 5.9 and 5.7 points per contest while Abby Jackson and Frankie Petersen each average 5.7 points per game as well.  Van Kirk has a team high 40 made three-point buckets and Jackson has 76 assists.  Farmer leads the team in steals with 48 and four other players have 33 or more steals.

The Hastings men are 17-5 overall and 11-2 in the GPAC with conference losses to Dordt (94-84) and Dakota Wesleyan (98-84).  The Broncos have won four games in a row since a loss to Nebraska-Kearney on January 12.

Hastings is averaging 80.1 points per game and allows 74.1 points per contest.  The Broncos are converting 47.6 percent of their field goals and opponents make 45.3 percent.  Hastings holds a 35.9-31.6 rebounding advantage and they have committed 311 turnovers to 338 for opponents. 

Brady Lollman leads the team with a 20.2 points per game average and he also nabs 4.6 rebounds per game.  He tops the team with 70 assists and he has 23 steals.  Tobin Reinwald adds 11.0 points per game while converting 53.2 percent of his field goals.  Jake Hamburger is scoring 9.9 points per game and Brett Wells is scoring 8.5 points per contest.  Ibou Fall and Zach Lenagh score 8.5 and 8.0 points per game with Fall converting 56 percent of his shots from the field.  Lenagh leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game and Akeem Morissant is second on the team with 60 assists.  Lollman tops the team with 50 three-point baskets and Hamburger has 32 for a team that is converting 34.9 percent of its three-point attempts.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 4-10 in the GPAC and 11-12 overall and had a two game winning streak stopped by Briar Cliff on Wednesday night.  The Defenders have conference wins over Mount Marty (twice), Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan. 

The Defenders outscore teams 72.3-71.9 and make 42.8 percent of their field goals while opponents are making 39.3 percent. The Defenders are also making 34.5 percent of the three-point shots they have attempted but have gotten 104 fewer field goal attempts than their foes in 23 games and have been outshot at the free throw line by 22.  Opponents have outrebounded Dordt 38.7-37.9 on average and have turned the ball over 18.9 times per game.

Dordt’s top active scorer is Kara Van Dyke with a 14.0 average to go with 7.3 rebounds per contest and she is making 48 percent of her field goals.  Jaimie Kok scores 10.8 points per game with 6.3 rebounds and Kayla Broekhuis tosses in 10.7 per game.  Danelle Boone scores 8.7 points per game in 22 games played and Jasmin Schelhaas scores 6.5 points per outing.  Boone has a team high 43 three-point baskets and Broekhuis has 29.

The Defender men are 22-2 this season and 13-1 in the GPAC with six games remaining.  Dordt has won six games in a row and went 7-1 in January.  The Defenders have losses this season to Davenport and Morningside.  Of their remaining six games Dordt has three at home and three on the road.

The Defenders are scoring 90 points per game and allow 75.6 points for their opponents.  Dordt holds a 41.8-30.5 rebounding advantage and is converting 49.5 percent of the field goals they shoot.  Opponents have converted 44.4 percent of their field goal attempts.  Dordt has taken 78 more field goals in 24 games while converting 504-691 free throws for 72.9 percent success and foes are making 356-488 for 73 percent.

Kyle Lindbergh averages 16.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per game with a 52.1 shooting percentage.  Dalton Franken scores 15.9 points with 4.5 rebounds.  Austin Katje’s average is 13.7 points per game and he is taking in 4.3 rebounds and he is making 43.4 percent of his three-point field goal attempts.  As a team Dordt is converting 37.5 percent of the three point shots the team tries.  Nathan Rindels has an 11.1 points per game average with 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.  Tyler Wolterstorff is good for 11.0 points per game and 4.2 rebounds.  David Den Herder comes off the bench for a 6.8 scoring average and 4.1 rebounds while Alex Terpstra and Bryan Sumner are each averaging 5.8 and 4.5 points per game.

LAST TIME…The Hastings women held on for a 76-72 win over Briar Cliff on Saturday, January 25 behind 21 points by Cami Bruckman and 16 by Jamie Van Kirk.  The Broncos took advantage of Briar Cliff’s inability to make consistently make free throws as the Chargers made just 17-40 free tosses.

The Defender women ended up on the short end of an 88-70 decision with Briar Cliff on Wednesday night.  Dordt trailed 44-41 at halftime and led briefly early in the second half.  The Defenders were hampered by 35 turnovers.  Dordt had a 38-36 rebounding edge and made 25-52 field goal attempts but were outshot from the floor as Briar Cliff was 34-68.  Kayla Broekhuis had 16 points and Kim Kroeze scored 14. 

The Hastings men held on for a 72-66 win over Briar Cliff on Saturday after leading by as many as 17 with eight minutes to go and trailing by one with three minutes left.  Brady Lollman had a team high 18 points and made 10-10 free throws.  Zach Lenagh had 15 poitns and six rebounds and Tobin Reinwald and Brett Wells both had ten points.  Hastings was 25-57 from the field and was outrebounded 36-33.  Hastings had just ten turnovers while forcing 18.

The Defender men won an 87-76 decision after leading 45-35 at halftime.  Briar Cliff cut the lead to six in the second half but Dordt led much of the second half by ten points or more.  The Defenders were outrebounded by a 37-35 margin  and turned the ball over ten times to 14 for Briar Cliff.  Austin Katje scored 20 while Tyler Wolterstorff and Nathan Rindels each had 14  with Rindels handing out five assists.  Bryan Sumner came off the bench to score 11.

HISTORY… The Bronco women enjoy an 18-4 advantage in the series and won the December 14 meeting by an 88-67 margin.  Elise Maresh had 15 in the loss for Dordt and Kara Van Dyke had 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Hastings got 23 points and eight rebounds from Laurel Zwiener and Shanelle Farmer came off the bench to score 15 and had six steals.

The Defender men lead the series with Hastings 18-4 and won the December 14 contest 94-84 after leading 36-35 at halftime.  Dordt had a 32-21 rebounding advantage and made 57.8 percent of its field goals while Hastings was making 51.8 percent.  Dordt got to the free throw line 48 times and made 39.  Dalton Franken had 24 points and seven rebounds while Nathan Rindels had 21 points and five assists.  Kyle Lindbergh scored 19 with nine rebounds and Austin Katje scored 13.  Hastings was paced by Jake Hamburger and Brady Lollman with 16 points each and Tobin Reinwald scored 15.

NEXT… Hastings will travel to Doane on Wednesday, February 5 in the next action for the Broncos.

Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday before having a rare Saturday off with no basketball on February 8.

RANKINGS…. The Defender men hold the no. 5 spot in the poll with 328 points.  Midland and Hastings are no. 7 and no. 13 respectively and Morningside is receiving votes.  Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) is the no. 1 team again this week in the poll.

Five GPAC teams are in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday, January 28.  Northwestern is no. 2; Hastings no. 7; Concordia no. 9; Morningside no. 10; Dakota Wesleyan no. 25.  The University of St. Francis is no. 1 in this week’s polling done by 14 coaches across the country.

MILESTONES…Kara Van Dyke went over 1,200 career points last week and currently has 1,228 which ranks seventh all-time behind Jacque Van Leeuwen’s 1,246 and Serena Van Beek’s 1,280.  Jaimie Kok went over 800 career points  and has 804 which ranks 24th all-time.  Van Dyke is passed Amber Soodsma for fourth all-time in rebounding with 739 and Anita Tinklenberg has 809 in third.  Kok has 402 and is tied in 25th with Kelsie De Nooy’s 402.  Kok has 180 assists which ranks 21st and Kara Van Dyke has 133 steals which puts her in 16th place all-time.

Austin Katje set a new career mark in three-point shots made last Saturday and he has 234 career three-point baskets to Cliff Warner’s 231.  Katje also moved past Eric Maas for 10th all-time in scoring with 1,316 points.  Kyle Lindbergh has 1,206  points and ranks 16 behind Kyle Van Arendonk’s 1,210.  Lindbergh has also gone over 800 career rebounds with 846 and ranks 2nd.  Lindbergh has 264 assists which ranks 10th behind Evan Beimers with 273 and Jason Nikkel with 274.  Lindbergh’s steal total is 155 which is the fourth highest ever and he trails Kevin Gesink in third with 175.
