Dordt-Morningside Basketball Wednesday

SPECIAL WELCOME…To the Village Panthers who will be playing at halftime of both the women’s and men’s games.  The Village Panthers are a basketball team from Village Northwest Unlimited based in Sheldon, Iowa.  Several individuals from Village Northwest have been active in Special Olympics since the Village’s beginning.  Currently 55 individuals from the Village participate in Special Olympic events including Basketball, Bocc, Softball, Volleyball, Track and Field, Soccer Skills, Basketball Skills and Bowling.

SCOUTING REPORT… The Morningside women are 21-5 this season and 12-4 in the GPAC.  The Mustangs have won six games in a row and are 15-2 since starting the season 6-3.  Morningside’s last loss was a 64-55 loss to Hastings on the road on January 18.

The Mustangs outscore teams 83.1-64.3 and outrebound teams 44.4-40.2.  The Mustangs convert 42.9 percent of their field goals and allow teams to make 37.2 percent.  The Mustangs have not been as potent from the three-point line as they have been in some seasons, converting 161-552 three-pointers for 29.2 percent success this season.

This year’s edition is very balanced with Leann Osten scoring 11.8 points per game and Ashlynn Muhl is good for 11.1 points per game.  Muhl is the team’s leading rebounder with an 8.1 average and Osten is the team leader in assists with 3.3 per game.  Lexi Ackerman is averaging just shy of double figures in scoring with a 9.7 average and Allison Bachman scores 9.6 per contest. Jessica Tietz scores 8.2 per game and Lacey Lehmann is scoring 6.0 points per contest.

The Morningside Mustang men are 18-8 overall and 12-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Jim Sykes’s team has won three games in a row and they are 9-2 in 2014.  The Mustangs have played a home-heavy schedule in that span, going 7-0 at home and 2-2 on the road.  The losses for Morningside in that stretch are to Hastings (80-71) and Nebraska Wesleyan (86-76).  The Mustangs were in the receiving votes category of the poll released on Tuesday, February 4.

Morningside is averaging 84.5 points per game and allow 76.2 points per contest while converting 48.8 percent of its field goals.  The Mustangs allow teams to make 45.2 percent of their shots and are outrebounding teams 36.0-32.3.  The Mustangs take advantage of their trips to the free throw line for 75 percent success and they make 40.2 percent of the three-point shots that they take.

Danny Rudeen scores 20.3 points per game and takes in 4.9 rebounds while dishing out a little over three assists per game.  Rudeen is making 50 percent of his field goals and is 63-134 from the three-point line for 47 percent success.  He’s the leader in free throws made and attempted and in shooting percentage for the team with a 140-158 clip for 88.6 percent success.  Kyle Nikkel scores 12.5 points per game with 6.3 rebounds and Steve O’Neill is averaging 12.5 points per game and he is the team leader in assists with 4.5 per game.  Tanner Miller adds 9.5 points per game and Andrew Christen comes off the bench to score 6.5.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Defender women are 12-13 this season and 5-11 in the GPAC.  Dordt snapped a two game losing skid on Wednesday, February 5 with a 71-70 last second win over Dakota Wesleyan.  Before that Dordt had lost to Hastings and Briar Cliff on the road.  Dordt is 4-6 in 2014 and has gone 6-4 this year at home.

The Defenders are scoring 71.8 points per game and allow 71.5 points per contest.  Dordt gets to 37.4 rebounds per game and allow 38.6 rebounds per contest.  Dordt is converting 43.1 percent of its field goals and 34.6 percent of their three-point shots.  Opponents are making 39.4 percent of their field goals.  Dordt has been outshot at the free throw line by its opponents.  The Defenders have converted 416-579 free tries for 71.8 percent success and opponents are 437-603 for 72.5 percent success.

Kara Van Dyke is scoring at a 13.8 points per game clip and takes down 7.3 rebounds per game.  Jaimie Kok is scoring 11.4 points per game and gets to 6.4 rebounds per contest.  Kok is converting 56.4 percent of her field goals and she also averages just over two assists per game to lead the team.  Kayla Broekhuis scores 11.1 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and she is making 51.4 percent of her three-point attempts.  Elise Maresh was leading the team in scoring with 16.2 points per game before being sidelined with injury since December 20.  Danelle Boone is averaging 8.7 points per game but she has missed the last three games because of injury as well.  Jasmin Schelhaas scores 7.0 points per game.

The Defender men are 24-2 this season and 15-1 in the GPAC.  Dordt has won eight games in a row since suffering a GPAC setback to Morningside in Sioux City on January 8.  The Defenders’ other loss this season is to Davenport.

Dordt has scored 100 or more points on six occasions and has scored 90 or more 16 times on the way to a 90.0 points per game average.  Opponents are scoring 76.1 points per contest this season against Dordt.  The Defenders have a 41.7-31.0 rebounding advantage through 26 games and have converted 49.2 percent of the field goals they have tried while foes have made 44.3 percent.  Dordt is 167-441 from the three-point line for 37.9 percent success while foes are 199-524 for 38.0 percent.  The Defenders have made more free throws than their opponents have attempted this season.  Dordt is 570-783 from the charity stripe while foes are 390-531, a conversion rate of 73.4 percent.

Five Dordt College players are averaging in double figures on offense led by Kyle Lindbergh’s16.3 points per game average.  Dalton Franken adds 15.8 points per game and Austin Katje 14.7.  Nathan Rindels and Tyler Wolterstorff convert 11.6 and 11.1 points per game respectively.  David Den Herder scores 6.8 points per game and Alex Terpstra is averaging 5.7 points per contest with Bryan Sumner adding 4.2.  Lindbergh is also the team’s leading rebounder with a 10.6 average.  Rindels leads a very balanced rebounding effort after Lindbergh’s number with a 5.0 average.  Katje, Franken and Den Herder all get 4.4 rebounds per game and Wolterstorff is at 4.2.  Rindels averages 3.6 assists and Lindbergh 2.9.  Lindbergh also tops the team in blocks with 38 and steals with 31 through 26 games played.  Katje, Terpstra, Sumner and Franken all have at least 21 three-pointers made and all have shooting percentages from behind the arc of better than 40 percent.

LAST TIME…The Morningside women held on to defeat Morningside 68-67 on Saturday after leading 36-32 at halftime.  The Mustangs were 21-56 from the field and overcame an 18-33 shooting day from the free throw line to secure the win.  The Mustangs were outrebounded 45-36.  Leeann Osten led the Mustangs with 18 and Allison Bachman tossed in ten.

The Defender women beat Dakota Wesleyan 71-70 on a Jaimie Kok field goal with less than a second remaining.  Dordt was 26-48 from the field and got outrebounded 35-29.  Kok had a team high 18 points while Kara Van Dyke and Jasmin Schelhaas had 14 each and Broekhuis 12.  Kim Kroeze had nine points and nine rebounds.

The Morningside men used a scalding hot 66 percent shooting day to defeat Midland 91-75 on Saturday in Sioux City.  The Mustangs were up 47-30 at halftime and held off the Warriors the entire second half.  Kyle Nikkel was 9-11 from the field for 24 points and he had eight rebounds.  Danny Rudeen added 19 points and was 7-10 from the floor.  Steve O’Neill scored 13 and Andrew Christen came off the bench to score 11 with Tanner Miller contributing 10.  Morningside had a 27-25 rebounding edge.

Dordt beat Dakota Wesleyan on February 5 by a final of 100-90.  Nathan Rindels led the team with 23 and he grabbed seven rebounds with four assists.  Austin Katje and Kyle Lindbergh each added 20 and Tyler Wolterstorff was good for 16.  Dalton Franken completed the double digit scoring list with 10 and David Den Herder shared game honors in rebounds with Lindbergh at 11.

HISTORY… The Defender women trail the series with Morningside 43-11 after losing the January 8 meeting by an 89-61 margin.  Dordt was led by Kayla Broekhuis with 17 and Danelle Boone had 11.  Lexi Ackerman topped the Mustangs with 20 and Leann Osten had 19.  Jessica Tietz and MaKayla Augustine each had 12 points.  Dordt’s last win in the series was a December 5, 2009 decision.

Morningside leads the men’s series 17-14 and the Mustangs snapped a three game losing skid in the series on January 8 at Allee Gym as they held on for a 100-96 win.  Dordt fell behind by double figures but closed to within two in the closing moments before Morningside sealed the win with a lay-in at the buzzer.  Danny Rudeen led the Mustangs with 24 and Steve O’Neill added 17.  Austin Katje topped Dordt with 24 and Kyle Lindbergh had 22.  Nathan Rindels added 14 and Tyler Wolterstorff nine in the loss.

NEXT… Morningside will travel to Doane on Saturday for a doubleheader while the Defenders are at Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday.  Both Dordt and Morningside will play two games next week as well.
