Dordt-Northwestern Basketball Tonight

SCOUTING REPORT… The Northwestern Red Raider women are 22-4 this season and 14-4 in the GPAC.  Northwestern has lost two games in a row to Dakota Wesleyan and Concordia, both on the road and their other two losses are to Morningside and Mount Marty and those two losses came away from home as well.  Chris Yaw’s team started the season with 18 straight wins before going 4-4 over their last eight contests dating back to January 22.

Northwestern is scoring at a 90.2 points per game clip and allow 70.7 points per contest.  The Raiders convert 46.9 percent of their field goals and 35.3 percent of their three-point shots.  Northwestern also outrebounds teams 44.3-33.8 and have forced 573 turnovers so far this season while committing 478. 

Alli Engebretson scores 18.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 7.7 per game as well.  Karen Hutson scores 17.0 points per game and she takes in 5.3 rebounds and is making 55.8 percent of her field goals.  Samantha Kleinsasser and Mackenzie Small average 16.1 and 12.7 points per game respectively with Kleinsasser getting to 7.5 rebounds per game.  The senior post player is also making 51.7 percent of her field goals this season.

The Raider men are 14-14 this season and 7-11 in the GPAC.  Northwestern has lost three games in a row to Doane, Dakota Wesleyan and Concordia.  The Raiders are 6-6 in 2014 and are 8-4 at the Bultman Center.

Zack Leeper has led the Raiders in scoring in 19 of their 28 games and is averaging 18.8 points per game with a shooting percentage of 47.6 and he takes down 5.4 rebounds per game and he has converted a team high 48 three-point baskets. Jordan Baker adds 11.8 points per game with a team high 6.5 rebounds per contest.  Baker is making 56.1 percent of his field goals.  No other Red Raiders is averaging double figures with Joey Habtemariam scoring 9.9 points per game and Levi Ettleman is at 6.7 points per contest with 5.8 rebounds.  Tyler Goldston scores 6.1 points per game and Rob Gill 5.5.

Northwestern is scoring 74.9 points per game and allow 76.7 points per outing.  The Raiders are converting 44.3 percent of their field goals and allow 43.7 percent success.  Northwestern holds a slight 38.5-36.2 rebounding advantage and have turned the ball over 407 times while forcing 346.

DEFENDER NOTES… The Dordt women are 13-14 this season and 6-12 in the GPAC and have won two of their last three outings.  The Defenders are currently tied for the eighth and final spot in the GPAC Tournament chase with two games to go.

Dordt is led in scoring by Elise Maresh with a 14.9 points per game average and has been back with the team for two games after missing nearly two months with injury.  Maresh scores 4.1 points per game and has made 50.7 percent of her field goal attempts.  Kara Van Dyke has a 13.4 points per game average and she has converted 45.4 percent of her field goals.  Van Dyke is the leading rebounder with a 7.3 average.  Jaimie Kok and Kayla Broekhuis score 11.1 points per game and Kok has a 6.4 rebounding average.  Broekhuis has converted 40 three-point baskets in 17 games played.  Danelle Boone is averaging 8.7 points per game but has missed the last five with injury.  Jasmin Schelhaas has worked her average to 6.6 points per game and she has 50 assists in 23 games played.

Dordt is outscoring teams by a 71.1-70.9 margin and is getting outrebounded 38.5-37.8.  The Defenders convert 42.6 percent of their field goals and hold teams to 39.2 percent success. 

The Defender men are 25-3 this season and 16-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  The Defenders have winning streaks of 13 of eight games this year and can clinch the GPAC title outright with a win this week. 

Dordt is scoring 90.0 points per game and allow 76.9 points per outing.  The Defenders outrebound teams 41.8-31.4 and are converting 49.1 percent of the field goals they attempt while opponents are converting 44.3 percent of their field goals.  Dordt is good for 38.6 percent success from the three-point line and have converted 615-846 free throws while opponents are at 432-585 from the charity stripe.

Kyle Lindbergh’s scoring average is 16.1 points per game and he leads the league in rebounding with a 10.5 average.  Lindbergh makes 51 percent of his field goals and is second on the team with 80 assists and he leads the conference in blocks with 40 and steals with 33.  Dalton Franken scores 15.5 points per game and takes down 4.4 rebounds per game.   Austin Katje is good for 15.1 points per game and he also takes in 4.4 rebounds per game.  Katje leads the team in three-point shooting where he is 71-156. Nathan Rindels is scoring at a 12.3 points per game clip and he has a 5.2 rebounds per game average while handing out a team high 97 assists.  Rindels is making 51.2 percent of his field goals.  Tyler Wolterstorff completes the double digit scoring with a 10.9 average to go with 4.1 rebounds.  David Den Herder tops the reserves with a 6.7 point per game average to go with 4.6 rebounds while Alex Terpstra and Bryan Sumner are scoring 5.5 and 4.3 points per game respectively.

LAST TIME…The Northwestern Red Raiders were unable to survive a 45 point salvo by Concordia’s Bailey Morris in dropping an 89-78 loss to the Bulldogs in Seward, Nebraska on Saturday.  The Raiders converted 38.1 percent of their field goals and were topped by Alli Engebretson’s 27 points and 15 rebounds.  Samantha Kleinsasser added 14 points and 11 rebounds with three assists.  Northwestern had a 53-36 rebounding advantage.

The Dordt women beat Nebraska Wesleyan 72-53 on Saturday.  The Defenders had a 44-39 rebounding advantage and converted 26-60 field goals.  Abby Chapman scored 16 and Kayla Broekhuis scored 15 with four assists.  Kim Kroeze tossed in 12 with four rebounds and three assists.

The Northwestern men lost a 95-75 decision to Concordia after leading 44-43 at halftime.  Concordia converted 63 percent of its field goals in the second half while limiting Northwestern to 35 percent. Zack Leeper scored 17 and Joey Habtemariam scored 15.  Jordan Baker tossed in 13 and had eight rebounds.

The Defender men led almost start to finish in dropping Nebraska Wesleyan 82-71 after leading 40-21 at halftime.  Austin Katje scored 23 and was 4-5 on his three-point attempts while Kyle Lindbergh scored 19 and grabbed 17 rebounds.  Nathan Rindels scored 18 with ten rebounds and Tyler Wolterstorff had 11 with four rebounds.

HISTORY… Northwestern leads the women’s series 64-17 and they won the January 15 meeting between these two teams 76-62 after trailing 36-35 at halftime.  Kara Van Dyke scored 19 in the loss for Dordt and Danelle Boone knocked down 16.  Alli Engebretson had a game high 25 points with 11 rebounds and Karen Hutson scored 11 with four assists. Dordt had a 41-40 rebounding edge but had 23 turnovers to Northwestern’s 12.

Northwestern leads the men’s series 76-27 but Dordt leads the series 13-10 since the 2003-2004 season.  The Defenders won the earlier meeting this year by a 78-64 difference after leading 39-25 at halftime.  Kyle Lindbergh had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Dalton Franken scored 16 with Nathan Rindels getting 14.  Austin Katje and Alex Terpstra each had 12 points.  Northwestern was topped by Joey Habtemariam’s 13 and Zack Leeper’s 12.

COACHES’ POLL…The Defender men dropped one spot in the February 18 poll to no. 4 with 332 points.  Midland held at no. 8 and Morningside is no. 18 this week.  Hastings is in the receiving votes portion of the poll.

The GPAC is represented by four teams in the women’s poll with Hastings leading the way at no. 4.  Concordia and Morningside are no. 6 and 7 respectively and Northwestern is no. 9.  Midland and Dakota Wesleyan are both in the receiving votes category of the poll.

NEXT… Dordt will host Midland on Saturday in the final regular season doubleheader of the season.  Northwestern will be at home as well with games against Hastings.  The GPAC post-season tournament opens on Tuesday, February 25 with the semifinal round on Saturday, March 1 and the finals on Tuesday, March 4.
