Dordt Softball Opens Season Friday

GAMETIME… Dordt College is scheduled to send its softball team to Shawnee, Oklahoma to play in four games hosted by Oklahoma Baptist University. The Defenders will play Baker (Kansas) and Oklahoma Baptist on Friday at noon and 4:00 respectively. Dordt will play Baker and GPAC member Hastings on Saturday, February 22 at 10:00 and noon.

SCOUTING REPORT… Oklahoma Baptist enters the weekend with a 2-3 record and they have lost three games in a row since taking a pair of games over Bethany (Kansas) and Northwestern (Iowa) to open the season.
Oklahoma Baptist’s top pitcher is Hannah Wilbur with a 1-2 mark and a 2.56 earned run average with 13 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings of work. McKenzie Jones is 1-1 with a 3.23 earned run average and she has 12 strikeouts in 13 innings. Emma Nelson has a .455 batting average with five hits—one of them a double. Amanda Harmson has a .444 batting average with three doubles and five singles and Shalee Cordell has a homerun and two runs batted in with two doubles and four singles. Harmon has a team high two stolen bases for a team that has been outscored 21-17 in five games.
Baker is 3-1 this season with wins over Oklahoma Wesleyan, Saint Mary and Doane. The Wildcats’ lone loss is to perennial power Oklahoma City, a 9-0 decision to start the season.
Current stats for Baker are unavailable. Top returners for Baker are Mallorie Nelson, a .358 batter in 2013 with nine doubles, a homerun and 15 runs batted in. Nelson also pitched 69 innings last season and was 6-7 with 85 strikeouts. Renata Dill had a .347 batting average in 2013 with seven doubles and eight stolen bases and Alyse Menghini had a .336 batting average with a team high 29 runs batted in and six homeruns.
Hastings College is playing in its season opener this weekend after putting together a 29-14 overall record and a 16-4 GPAC mark. The Broncos advanced to the NAIA National Softball Championships where they went 0-2.
Haley Burge led the team in batting average last season with a .395 clip and 18 runs batted with a team high 60 hits and 33 runs scored and two doubles. Molly Mullervy had a .341 batting average with six doubles and 46 hits and Taylor Erlenbusch had 27 hits and nine doubles with a .329 batting average in 2013. Erlenbusch also had a 17-3 record on the mound with a 2.37 earned run average while striking out 149 batters in 142 innings of work. McKenzie Welchert also returns after posting an 11-9 record with a 3.34 earned run average and 54 strikeouts in 117 innings.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defenders will try to bounce back from a 6-33 2013 season and a 2-18 GPAC mark.
Dordt returns Ashton Beaird with a .258 batting average with 25 hits and 18 runs scored with a team high eight doubles and six homeruns with 18 runs batted in. Sidney Larsen batted .219 last season with 16 hits and also pitched in 25 games and posted a 5-16 record with a 4.73 earned run average and she struck out 74 in 154 innings of work.
Dordt will have a youthful roster with 11 freshman on the squad.
THE SERIES… The two teams played last season on April 21 in Crete, Nebraska and Doane won both games by scores of 5-4 and 4-0 to take a 17-15 lead in the series.

NEXT UP… Oklahoma Baptist will travel to SAGU (Texas) on February 28 and March 1 for a pair of conference doubleheaders.
Baker will be off for a little while before facing Sterling (Kansas) and Oklahoma Science and Arts on March 7.
Hastings’s next action is March 1 when they travel to face Bethel (Kansas) in a doubleheader.
Dordt will take a trip to Tucscon, Arizona to play ten games in five days from March 10-14.
