Dordt Writes event features author of Love Idol, Jennifer Dukes Lee

March 21, 2014

The April Dordt Writes event will feature former Dordt College adjunct English Professor Jennifer Dukes Lee. All are invited to share a cup of coffee and a cookie and hear her talk briefly about her debut book, Love Idol, at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 4, in the Dordt College John and Louise Hulst Library.

A former reporter for the Des Moines Register, Lee won awards by interviewing subjects ranging from local dignitaries to the vice president of the United States but never reached the goal she coveted: perfection. It took years for Lee to realize she had an approval addiction, and that a cure existed.

“I was firmly in the grip of what I’ve come to call the ‘Love Idol,’” said Lee. “The Love Idol’s prey lives in fear of failing to meet expectations. We fear our facades will drop. We cringe over the threat of disapproval, real or imagined. And we feel as if we continually need to explain away any potential flaw. It’s an exhausting life.”

In Love Idol, Lee invites readers to make peace with imperfection. She shows that it’s possible to stop working overtime for love and instead discover the joy of a life full of freedom in Christ.
