Three Dordt Athletes Earn District Honor

(Thursday, May 29; Sioux Center, Iowa) Three Dordt College women’s athletes have been named Capital One Academic All-District honorees for track and field and cross country. Katie Bonnema (Senior; Ireton, Iowa), Christy Heidema (Senior; Ridgetown, Ontario) and Lauren Opp (Junior; Garner, Iowa) were all accorded the honor in balloting done by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). All three athletes are now eligible for Capital One Academic All-American status. Voting for that honor will open on June 3.
Bonnema is a repeat selection for the district honor after claiming CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American second-team honors in 2013. Bonnema recently capped her collegiate career with a sixth place finish at placed 6th at 2014 NAIA Outdoor National Championship in the 800 meters after running a school record 2:08.58 in the prelims. She also ran to a third place finish in the 2014 NAIA Indoor Nationals 600 meters in 1:31.16 and was part of 2nd place NAIA Indoor National 4x800. Bonnema ran at the NAIA National Championship Cross Country meet where Dordt finished 6th and she finished 161st in 19:41. She was the 2013 NAIA 600 meter indoor national champ and the 2012 NAIA 600 meter indoor national runner-up. Bonnema graduated Dordt College after studying elementary education and had a 3.52 cumulative grade point average.
Opp recently completed her junior season and finished seventh at the 2014 NAIA Outdoor 10,000 meter race in a time of 37:21.43. She also ran at the 2014 NAIA Indoor Nationals in the 5,000 and placed seventh in 17:29.31. Opp claimed 16th place at the 2013 NAIA Cross Country National Championship with a time of 18:18 on the 5,000 meter course and achieved NAIA All-American status. A 2014 GPAC nominee to the NAIA for the AO Duer Award, Opp was a 2013 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete in cross country and a 2014 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete in track and field. Opp has a 4.0 grade point average and is studying health-human performance.
Heidema finished 9th in the 2014 Indoor NAIA National Championship Triple Jump with a 37-7.75 performance and jumped 36-10.25 in the Outdoor Championship and placed 16th. Heidema was a 2013 and 2014 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete in track and field. She studied biology at Dordt College and had a 4.0 cumulative grade point average before graduating in May.
