Dordt Soccer Opens At Waldorf

GAMETIME…Dordt College will travel to Forest City, Iowa to face the Waldorf Warriors on Saturday, August 30.  The women’s game will start at 1:00 with the men’s game to follow at about 3:15.  Results will be posted on ; and .

SCOUTING REPORT… The Waldorf women are 0-1 this season after opening the year with a 3-1 loss at Grand View on Thursday, August 28.  The Warriors finished the 2013 campaign with a 9-9-1 record and won three out the last four matches it played last season. 

Britney Thornton is back after scoring a team high 12 goals last year for a team that outscore opponents 39-28.  Madisen Haines and Airenne Curry also return after scoring four and three goals respectively.  Haines had nine assists to lead the team and Jennifer Geil had seven assists.  The Warriors also welcome back both of their 2013 goalkeepers.  Taylor Reeves allowed three goals in 263 minutes and made nine saves.  Kaylee Vitale allowed 25 goals in 1465 minutes and made 85 saves while playing in 18 games.

The Waldorf men were also 9-9-1 last season but were outscored 43-31 for the entire season.  This year’s Warrior team was beaten by AIB on Wednesday, August 27 by a 3-0 score.

Kwaku Amoah was the top goal scorer a year ago with 11 goals.  Waldorf lost its next leading goal scorer in Scott Hanson.  Stephen Jenkins is the only returner with experience at keeper and his experience was limited to 12 minutes of play in one game. 

DORDT COLLEGE NOTES… The Dordt College women are coming off a 2013 season where they were 0-17-1.  Nicole Postman scored four goals for the Defenders and returns for the 2014 season.  Katie Kortman will need to be replaced in goal where she made 152 saves in 1523 minutes of play.

The Defender men were 5-13-1 in 2013 and were outscored 41-31.  Dordt put 101 shots on goal while opponents had 134 in the 19 contests.  Dordt qualified for the GPAC post-season playoffs and was eliminated by Hastings College.  The top-returning goal scorer is Brady Van Holland who found the net nine times and had five assists.  Van Holland will be unavailable in the early season as he comes back from injury.  Derick Sackey scored four goals in 2013 and Cody Van Holland had three.  Jon Brinkerhoff and Joey Rasnic played all of the minutes in goal with 1187 and 562 respectively.  Brinkerhoff allowed 30 goals and made 61 saves while Rasnic allowed 11 goals and had 30 saves.

THE SERIES… The Defender women lead the series with Waldorf 3-0-1 with the last meeting taking place on August 31, 2013.  The Defenders and Warriors played to a 3-3 deadlock with Waldorf taking a 3-1 lead in the 55th minute.  Allison Hogan got a goal in the 61st minute and Sarah Byron tied it in the 83rd minute to salvage the tie.  Dordt was outshot 11-7 on goal.  Katie Kortman played all 110 minutes in goal and made eight saves.

The Defender men lead the series 7-0 and beat Waldorf on August 31, 2013 by a score of 6-2.  Dordt was up 3-0 at halftime only to see Waldorf cut the lead to 4-2 with goals in the 64th and 69th minutes.  Jon Brinkerhoff made four saves in goal.  Steven Talsma and Josh Brinkerhoff each had two goals and Brady Van Holland had two assists.

LAST TIME… The Waldorf women lost to Grand View on Thursday, surrendering two goals in the second half after fighting to a 1-1 intermission tie.  Thornton had a goal to open the scoring in the 13th minute but the Warriors allowed the equalizer in the final minute of the first half and gave up counters in the 56th and 81st minutes.  Waldorf was out-shot 13-5 in the loss.

Waldorf’s men lost a 3-0 decision to AIB on Wednesday after getting out shot 8-1.  AIB scored its goals in the 46th, 59th and 77th minutes. 

Dordt is playing in its season opener in both men’s and women’s play.

NEXT UP…… The Waldorf women and men will face Mount Mercy on Tuesday, September 2 in non-conference play.

The Defenders travel to Denver, Colorado to play Johnson and Wales and Presentation on Friday and Saturday, September 5 and 6.
