Dordt student employees recognized during National Student Employee Week

Isaiah Nanninga and MuYi Liu were recognized as this year's recipients of Dordt University's Student Employee of the Year Award.

During National Student Employee Week (April 13 –19), Dordt University officials recognized Isaiah Nanninga and MuYi Liu as this year’s student employees of the year. They each received a $500 payroll bonus as well as the Dordt University Student Employee of the Year Award.

To be eligible for the award, students need to be nominated and serve in their nominated role for the entire academic year. The selection process considers total hours worked, number of semesters in the role, and supervisor evaluations. Supervisors ranked nominees in these areas: leadership, teamwork, work ethic, attitude and problem solving. Optional recommendation letters also were submitted and considered.

According to Nanninga’s supervisor, Associate Athletic Director Trent Roose, Nanninga’s greatest attribute is his integrity and positive attitude. “He has made a conscious effort in welcoming all facility users and assisting them as needed in the American State Bank Sports Complex and the Sioux Center community,” he says. “Nanninga serves as a tremendous role model for the young student employees who are currently under his care. He has made a large impact in all settings in which he has been placed.”

Similarly, Liu’s supervisors, Computer Service Specialist Sandy Reitsma and Computing Specialist Jaris Visscher, say, “His friendly and approachable nature makes him a joy to work with. Whether assisting faculty, staff, or fellow students, his ability to build strong relationships with those around him fosters a welcoming and collaborative environment, making Computer Services not just a workplace but a place where people feel valued and supported.”

During the 2024–2025 academic year, over 850 students were employed on campus at Dordt University. “We view student employment at Dordt as a co-curricular activity and an essential component of a student’s overall education,” says Director of Student Employment Kyle Achterhoff. “Not only do the students learn essential skills, but they also contribute to Dordt’s broader community, helping campus operate smoothly.”

“Dordt could not function without our student employees, and we’re so grateful for all they do,” he adds.
