Dordt hosts upcoming student organ and piano recital
The Dordt University Music Department is hosting a student recital featuring seniors Ashley Van Engen, organ, and Loyal Tillotson, piano. The free recital will be held on Saturday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A public reception will follow.
Van Engen, of Sioux Center, Iowa, will perform a broad repertoire, including the piece Fantasy for the Organ on Psalm 150, written by Gerhard Krapf for the dedication of Dordt’s Casavant organ 40 years ago, and the well-known Toccata from Symphony No. 5 by Charles-Marie Widor.
Tillotson, of Rapid City, South Dakota, will be joined by Dordt University senior Andrea Veldman of Hudson, South Dakota, for a piano duet. Tillotson’s repertoire includes a sampling of different styles: a lively and charming Mozart duet, a grand and dramatic solo by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, a reflective and comforting hymn arrangement, a jovial, toe-tapping Scott Joplin rag, and more. A colorful assortment of pieces by some of his favorite composers.
Van Engen is majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in human resource management and office management. She studies organ with Dr. Carrie Groenewold and is an active accompanist for the Dordt Music Department. She is a three-time recipient of the Ringerwole Organ Scholarship.
Tillotson is majoring in Engineering Science and Music, and he studies piano with Dr. John MacInnis. He has served as an accompanist for vocal and instrumental students at Dordt and also participates in Dordt choral ensembles.
Masks are required for those attending the recital and seating groups will be socially distanced. Dordt University continues to monitor how Covid-19 affects our campus and community. Please visit dordt.edu/updates on the day of the event to see if there are any restrictions or cancellations.
