Dordt University agriculture students placed strongly at the Professional Agricultural Student (PAS) state and national competitions this spring.
Twenty-two Dordt students attended the state competition, held in Moravia, Iowa. The students competed as a team and as individuals. Team event topics included Farm Business, Dairy, Soil Science, and more. The individual topics included Impromptu Speaking, Veterinary Technology, and Employment Interview. Seven of the teams placed first, with two teams landing in the top five. As for individual results, seven students placed first in their respective contest areas. Eleven individuals placed in the top three of their contest areas. Regarding the College Bowl, Dordt University Team 1 achieved first place, while Dordt University Team 2 placed third.

As for the National PAS Competition, held in Springfield, Illinois, Dordt had four top 10 teams for their contest areas. Regarding individual contests, Dordt had seven in the top five of their contest areas. Eleven Dordt students attended the national competition.
Kelsey Hubach, a junior agriculture major from Hudsonville, Michigan, appreciates how seriously Dordt students take the PAS competitions. “What I appreciate most about participating in PAS are the skills I’ve gained through participating in different contests,” she says.
During her freshman and sophomore year, she participated in the public speaking forums, where she says she “gained valuable speaking skills that will benefit me in the future.”
“This year, I participated in the Ag Promotion and Marketing contest, and I gained valuable skills in crafting social media campaigns and marketing plans,” she adds.
Hubach is grateful for the opportunity to be part of PAS during her time at Dordt. “I think it is important for Dordt to do well in PAS because much of our preparation for contests stems from the information that we have learned in our agriculture classes,” she says.

An art exhibit titled “Emphasis on Metamorphosis,” which features the work of Senior Art Major Jonathan Trimble, is currently on display in the Department of Art and Design Gallery in the Ribbens Academic Complex at Dordt University.
