Dordt University Director of Gaming Dr. Brad Hickey has developed a new gaming and Christian faith course, which will be offered this fall.
Engaging the World of Gaming explores the intersection of gaming culture and Christian faith, providing participants with a thoughtful framework for engaging with this rapidly growing cultural phenomenon.
“This course, at its core, is concerned with providing students with a strong foundation of theological and cultural knowledge that will allow us to be able to understand, diagnose, and engage nerd culture-related phenomena as it really is,” says Hickey.
The course will cover topics such as the history and influence of gaming culture, the meaning and value people find in gaming, and how to reflect on gaming culture from a Christian perspective. Designed for those seeking to connect with gamers in their families, churches, or communities, as well as those wishing to minister through gaming, the course provides valuable insights into this space.
“Philosophically speaking, Dordt’s entire approach to gaming is missional and ministry-facing, primarily interested in first, providing meaningful space to foster genuine community between students with gaming-related interests and second, educating and developing strong leaders with gaming-related callings,” says Hickey.
“Misunderstandings have often led to a complicated relationship with members of nerd culture,” which has hindered the church’s ability to engage meaningfully with younger generations. Hickey also says there is a critical need for new approaches, stating, “members of nerd culture... are pivotal to these efforts.”
“We believe that gaming-related gifts and callings, like any other Spirit-provided giftings, are a valuable gift from the Holy Spirit given for a time such as this. In addition, Dordt’s theological resources and commitments also lead me to recognize gaming-related activities can be a powerful act of Christian worship that brings delight to our hearts, honor to God, and shalom to our world and our neighbors.”
The semester-long course is fully online and requires about 9 hours per week of study. For more information, visit dordt.edu/engaging-the-world-of-gaming.
