Dordt University’s Defender Days Features a Lineup of Musical Concerts

Dordt University's Music Department will host a series of concerts during Defender Days, showcasing students' talents through a mix of jazz, traditional, contemporary, and worship-focused performances.

Dordt University’s Music Department will host a series of concerts during Defender Days (October 25 -26).

The events begin with the 4th Avenue Jazz Concert at 3:10 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium on Friday, October 25. The concert features Dordt’s 4th Avenue Singers and the 4th Avenue Band performing a mix of jazz favorites, including a jazzy rendition of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” along with songs by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Toto.

Following this, the Fall Music Festival opens with instrumental ensembles at 7:00 p.m. The Dordt Wind Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, and Campus-Community Band will perform a rich selection of traditional and contemporary compositions.

The evening continues with performances by four choral ensembles—Bella Voce, Canons of Dordt, Chorale, and Concert Choir—conducted by Dr. Carrie Groenewold, Tim Van Voorst, and Dr. Ryan Smit. These performances will focus on themes of joy, peace, praise, and community.

“The Fall Music Festival is a comprehensive showcase of all the ensembles that the Dordt music department has to offer,” says Dr. Ryan Smit, director of choral activities at Dordt University. “A wide variety of music will be performed, and we hope that audiences experience excellent music that is both familiar and new, thrilling and contemplative, deeply spiritual and just plain fun. And the ultimate end of all that we program and perform is to bring glory to God through musical excellence.””

The Defender Days Hymn Festival will take place on Saturday, October 26, at 10:30 a.m. A prelude by Dordt organ students begins at 10 a.m.

“A Hymn Festival is about singing together in a festive style,” says Dr. Carrie Groenewold, associate professor of music at Dordt. “We will sing some timeless hymns and introduce some newer pieces as well.”

This festival will include Bella Voce, brass, organ, and poetry composed by Kendra Thompson, promising a celebrative worship experience with timeless hymns.

The concerts will be available on livestream at https://www.dordt.edu/live-events.
