Dordt women's basketball wins GPAC tournament championship

For the second consecutive year, the Dordt University Defender women's basketball team claimed both the GPAC regular season and tournament championships, securing a 77-54 victory over Briar Cliff University in the title game in Sioux Center.

For the second year in a row the Dordt University Defender women's basketball team swept the GPAC regular season championship and the postseason tournament championship, getting a 77-54 win over Briar Cliff University in the title game in Sioux Center.

The Defenders used a strong defense to pull away from a 3-2 lead and scored 12 points in a row, capping the run with a Macy Sievers basket for a 15-12 lead. Willow Bleeker added to the lead late in the quarter with her second three-point basket for a 23-6 advantage and settled for a 23-8 lead when the quarter ended.

Briar Cliff cut the lead to 28-18 prompting a Dordt timeout. Desta Hoogendoorn got Dordt back on track with back to back baskets and five unanswered by Macy Sievers to end the half put Dordt up 39-23. The Chargers twice rallied to within 12 twice, the last time at 44-32 but Stella Charleston's second three-point basket capped an 8-2 run for a 52-34 lead and extended the lead to 64-41 on a Sievers three-point basket right before the horn.

The fourth quarter was played between a 22 and 28 point difference for the eventual 23-point victory.

Macy Sievers highlighted the Dordt effort with her second triple-double of the season with 15 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists and three steals.

Dordt is 29-2 and will await its post season assignment which will be announced on Thursday night, March 6. Dordt will host the first and second rounds of the NAIA National Championship on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15.
