Dordt Worship recently released a song titled “I Thank God,” which is now available on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube.

Rev. Dr. Jeremy Perigo, professor of theology and worship arts at Dordt, describes “I Thank God” as “an upbeat, Gospel-infused, song of testimony focused on Christ’s victory over death.”

The song features the vocal leadership of two of Dordt Worship’s coordinators: junior education major Jenna Hekman and junior agriculture business major Enoch Rop. Many Dordt staff, faculty, students, and recent alumni were also involved in creating this song.

“Over the last few years, this song resonated with our Dordt Worship travel team who served in worship leadership at regional churches, conferences, and youth groups,” says Perigo. “It brought such communal joy that we wanted to share it more widely.”

The song expresses thanksgiving, which is a biblical imperative, he adds, as multiple times the Psalms implore God’s people to give thanks. “With ‘I Thank God,’ the percussive drive and potent lyrics make it difficult to not engage in embodied worship,” he says. “We hope as our community listens, they will join in thanking our God, who has broken us free from sin and death.”

Director of Production Arts Alex Priore says that it is a joy to work with students on creating worship songs. “Each song showcases different student talents and style,” she says. “Much of this track came together with input and creativity from my summer interns, which is one of the most rewarding parts of producing these Dordt Worship singles for me. Not only are we highlighting the voices and musical talents of students, but students played an integral role in the engineering and arranging of this song.”

“I Thank God” is one of seven songs that Dordt Worship will release this year. Dordt students are involved in all areas of production as artists, engineers, and graphic designers.

“With Alex’s skills in production combined with Dordt’s amazing recording equipment, our students are producing professional-level projects to share with the Defender community around the world,” adds Perigo.

Those involved in the creation of “I Thank God” include:

  • Enock Rop and Jenna Hekman (Vocals)

  • Josh Kroeze (Percussion)
  • Alex Priore (Acoustic guitar)
