Dordt’s HR executive director receives Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Award

Sue Droog, executive director of human resources at Dordt University, recently received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Award.

The awards program recognizes employers for employment policies and practices that are supportive of their employees’ participation in the National Guard and Reserve. Shane Kramer, a custodian at Dordt and a reserve member who is currently deployed, nominated Droog for the award because of the ways she worked with him to ensure Dordt’s policies and military leave details were clear and in compliance as well as making sure that Kramer and his family had all the information they would need to have a smooth transition for his one-year deployment.

“It is important to us at Dordt that Shane knows we value him as an employee and that we are thankful for his service to our country,” says Droog. “We want to do what we can to make sure that he and his family feel connected to the Dordt community during his deployment. We look forward to when he can rejoin the Facilities and Service team again after his deployment.”

“It is important that policies are examined so that we can be sure they are serving a clear purpose and are providing clarity, direction, and guidance."

Droog says it was an honor to be nominated. She has had family members, including her father and father-in-law, who have served in the armed forces or National Guard, and she deeply appreciates the sacrifice and service that military members give to their country.

“It is important that policies are examined so that we can be sure they are serving a clear purpose and are providing clarity, direction, and guidance,” says Droog. “We try to be diligent about reviewing policies to ensure that they serve both the university and the employee well. Faculty and staff seem to appreciate knowing what to expect, how things might be handled, and what their options are.”

Droog was presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Award by Al Bloemendaal, former Sioux Center American Legion Doornink Brunsting Post 199 commander.

“We wish Shane God’s richest blessings for safety for him and peace for him and his family during his deployment,” adds Droog.
