Ensemble Chaconne to perform at Dordt University on March 17

On Friday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, Dordt University will host Ensemble Chaconne for a concert titled “The Glorious Ones: Music by the Great Late Baroque Masters.” The Ensemble Chaconne will also give a presentation on March 17 at 3 p.m. in the Choir Room.

During this performance, Ensemble Chaconne will transport audience members to the salons and palaces of 18th century Europe. Praised by Classical Voice of North Carolina as “a powerhouse of great playing,” the ensemble performs gems by J.S. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann, and other leading composers of the baroque era. Now celebrating its 37th season, the ensemble tours widely in the U.S. and abroad.

Ensemble Chaconne’s extensive career includes performances for The National Gallery in London, The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park Florida, The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, The Edison Theatre in St Louis, the Yale Center for British Art, Jordan Hall in Boston, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, Connecticut Early Music Festival, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Morton Arboretum Chamber Series (Chicago area), The Nielsen Series at Grand View University (Des Moines), and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Residency at Davidson College, to name a few.

The program for The Glorious Ones includes:

  • Quatorzieme Concert by François Couperin
  • Pièces in a Minor by Sylvius Leopold Weiss
  • Sonata in G Major Op. 1, No. 5 by George Frederick Handel
  • Fantasia 10 in E Major by Georg Philipp Telemann
  • Concerto in Re Maggiore (per liuto) by Antonio Vivaldi
  • Sonata in E Minor BWV 1034 by J.S. Bach

Group members include Peter H. Bloom, baroque flute; Carol Lewis, viola da gamba; Olav Chris Henriksen, baroque lute.

To complement the evening concert, Ensemble Chaconne will give an afternoon lecture-demonstration describing the historical instruments, illustrating performance styles, and playing musical examples. The class will include conversations and Q&A as well. The class will take place on March 17 from 3 to 4 p.m.
