Stephen Leinen, a freshman agriculture: plant science major of Harlan, Iowa, has been selected to be part of the College Advisory Team for Iowa Corn’s 2023-24 program. He is one of 23 students selected from colleges and universities across the state of Iowa to participate in the advisory team.

The group will meet four times a year to receive training by Iowa Corn in areas such as leadership, effective communication, policy, and industry relations. Leinen and the advisory group will also have the opportunity to visit the Iowa state capitol, tour industry leaders’ operations, and expand their network and knowledge outside of the classroom.

Leinen is looking forward to being able to share input and learn more about Iowa Corn as part of the advisory group. “Being part of this team will help me further my understanding of being in the agricultural field,” he says. “It is a new door that I am excited to open.”

“Stephen has a positive attitude and gets along well with his peers,” says Dr. Jeremy Hummel, professor of agriculture. “He has expressed interest in the field of agronomy, and therefore the Agriculture Department thought to nominate him for this team.”

Iowa Corn is Iowa’s corn-producers commodity group, and anyone who wants to be involved in the direction of the corn or soybean industry in Iowa would benefit from connecting with such an organization, adds Hummel. “These sorts of opportunities get students to connect with the professional organizations that are active in decision-making in the agriculture industry,” he says.

Leinen says that he enjoys being part of Dordt’s agriculture program. “All of the agriculture professors are welcoming and very informed about the subjects they teach. I think that’s great, because it keeps us students engaged in class.”
