Student recital to be held on March 25
The community is invited to the saxophone recital of Dordt University junior Brody Joens. The free recital will be held on Saturday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A public reception will follow.
The recital will feature a variety of styles and musical eras, including Classical, Baroque, French Romantic, Contemporary, and Jazz. Joens will perform on soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone during the recital. A highlight of the repertoire is Blue Caprice, which features 14 different styles of jazz throughout the piece. Joens will be accompanied on piano by Dordt University saxophone and voice instructor Pamela De Haan.
In addition to solo saxophone pieces, the recital includes performances by a saxophone quartet and a jazz combo.
Additional members of the saxophone quartet are Annika Rynders (soprano saxophone), of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Breanna Ten Pas (alto saxophone) of Hull, Iowa; and Sierra Meyer (baritone saxophone) of Doon, Iowa. The jazz combo includes Rynders (alto saxophone); Emma McGaughey (tenor saxophone) of Martinsville, Indiana; Lael Bervig (piano) of Park Rapids, Minnesota; Emily Zuidema (bass) of Sioux Center, Iowa; and James Kamstra (drum set) of Bellflower, California.
The jazz combo is a student-led small jazz group that has performed at Dordt University events such as a 4th Avenue Jazz concert, a Small Ensembles Recital, and Arts in the Prairie, as well as at the Fruited Plain.
Joens, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is majoring in Business Administration: Marketing with a minor in Music Performance. He has studied saxophone with Pamela De Haan since 2020, has been a member of the Dordt University Wind Symphony since 2020, and is a member of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra.
