Jon Moeller

Instructor of Criminal Justice

Jon Moeller serves as instructor of criminal justice at Dordt University.

With more than 32 years of law enforcement experience, Moeller has spent his adult life serving the Lord, the United States, and the greater community. He spent more than 22 years as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigators (FBI), where he handled all types of federal investigations including violent crimes, white collar crimes, cybercrimes, and counterterrorism. He still works part-time as a sheriff’s deputy in the area.

“I enjoy teaching the next generation about the criminal justice system, the legal system, and policing,” says Moeller. “It is important to examine and study each of these areas acknowledging the sinful nature of man and through the lens of grace and mercy.”

Moeller has worked many high profile cases, including the kidnapping and safe return of Alicia Kozakiewicz, the Amerithrax investigation, and the D.C. Sniper killings by Malvo & Muhammed. He has a First Responder during the September 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon and was the FBI HMRT team leader on the first FBI Hazmat and Evidence Response team to enter the Pentagon on September 12, 2001. He has interviewed and worked cases of serial killers, including Robert Ben Rhoades.

Prior to working with the FBI, Moeller was an inner-city patrol officer and an undercover detective for the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. “I was undercover 24/7 for three years, living amongst addicts and dealers,” he recalls. “It was during this time as an undercover narc that God revealed Himself to me through the tragedy I was witnessing. I became saved by the grace of Jesus Christ.” Read more about his faith journey in The Gospel Coalition’s “How to Be a Christian in Law Enforcement.”

He is involved in many areas of public service, including:

  • President, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), Iowa/Nebraska
  • Fraternal Order of Police (FOP)
  • The Federalist Society
  • Life Member, Alpha Phi Sigma, Criminal Justice Honor Society
  • Sons of the American Legion

Moeller is married with four children. He enjoys baseball: “I love sharing Christ with professional baseball players. I have served with the ministry of Baseball Chapel for 21 years and currently serve as the chaplain for the Sioux City Explorers.”
